Chapter 7 - The Unraveling of Megan

By Monday morning, the fall of the Peterson family was front-page news across every major Chicago newspaper and financial journal.

LOCAL REAL ESTATE EMPIRE PETERSON HOLDINGS COLLAPSES UNDER FEDERAL FRAUD INVESTIGATION; FOUNDER FACES GRAND LARCENY CHARGES.

The winter charity gala at the Drake Hotel had been canceled on Saturday night with less than three hours' notice, replaced by federal marshals auditing the Peterson family's North Shore mansion and seizing luxury vehicles from the driveway.

Mark, realizing that his family’s dynasty was utterly destroyed and that his own compliance failures made him a co-defendant in the federal probe, had packed his remaining belongings into a rented storage unit and moved into a modest studio apartment on the far north side of the city. He tried calling me twice to beg for forgiveness, claiming he was "just as much a victim of Frank and Megan’s toxicity as I was."

I didn't answer either call. I simply forwarded his messages to Marcus to be filed as exhibits in our expedited divorce proceedings.

As for Megan, her unraveling was swift and absolute.

When the news broke that her family’s wealth was a fraudulent illusion, her high-society fiancé—a wealthy hedge-fund manager whose own family prided themselves on pedigree—publicly called off their upcoming wedding via a humiliating statement released through his publicist. Her friends, recognizing that her social currency had dropped to zero, blocked her phone numbers and deleted her from their circles.

Left with nothing, Megan tried to corner me in the underground parking garage of my office building on Tuesday afternoon.

My black SUV had just parked in my reserved spot when Megan stepped out from behind a concrete pillar, blocking my exit.

She looked terrible. Her hair was unwashed, her designer coat looked like it hadn't been pressed in days, and her eyes were red-rimmed and frantic.

“Chloe!” she hissed, rushing toward my car door as I opened it. “You have to call off your lawyers! This is insane! You’ve ruined my life! My fiancé left me, my parents are facing prison time, and I’m being sued by half the vendors in the city!”

I stepped out of the car, closing the door behind me with a solid thud. I looked at her with calm, detached indifference.

“I didn't ruin your life, Megan,” I said quietly. “Your own arrogance and cruelty did. I simply stopped protecting you from the consequences.”

Megan’s face twisted with rage, her hands balling into tight fists at her sides. “You arrogant little bitch! You think you’re so untouchable just because you have money now! You’ll always be an outsider! You’ll never belong!”

“You’re right,” I replied, taking a step closer to her, my voice steady and unshakeable. “I don't belong in your world. And after today, neither do you.”

Before Megan could liven her retort, two building security guards—alerted by Zoe’s automated garage camera system—stepped out of the stairwell, grabbing Megan firmly by her arms.

“Ma’am, you are trespassing on private property,” the lead guard instructed. “Step away from Mrs. Peterson or we will escort you out in handcuffs.”

Megan thrashed against their grip, screaming obscenities as they dragged her away toward the elevators, her voice echoing off the concrete walls until the heavy doors slid shut.

I stood alone in the quiet garage for a moment, taking a deep breath of the cool air.

The nightmare was over. The monsters who had tried to break my family had been dismantled by their own greed.

I unlocked my car, got inside, and drove home to my daughter.
