Chapter 4 - The House of Glass

I took the job, and I moved into the Sterling estate. It was a place of sterile, cold beauty. Julian was indeed isolated, trapped in a wing of the house that felt more like a tomb than a home.

The first week was a war of attrition. Julian didn't want a nurse; he wanted to be left alone to fade away. He was cynical, sharp-tongued, and deeply wounded by the expectations of his father.

"So, you’re the prize nurse," he sneered one afternoon, throwing a book across the room. "The one Dad paraded around to make Clara look bad. How much did he pay you to be his moral compass?"

I didn't flinch. I picked up the book and placed it back on the shelf. "He didn't pay me to be anything, Julian. I’m here because I’m good at my job, and because for once in my life, I want to work for someone who actually acknowledges the value of the work."

I started treating him not as a patient, but as a person. I took him out into the garden. I ignored his insults. I told him stories from the ER—not the gory ones, but the human ones. The moments of quiet connection between nurses and patients.

One evening, he finally stopped looking at his screens and looked at me. "Why do you care? Nobody here cares. They just want me 'fixed' so I can sit on the board of directors."

"I don't care about the board of directors," I said softly, sitting by the window. "I care about whether you're breathing, whether you're in pain, and whether you realize that your life is worth more than the family name attached to it."

Over the next month, the barriers began to crumble. He started to walk again, his physical therapy sessions becoming more rigorous because he started wanting to leave the house. He saw me not as an employee, but as an ally. And I, for the first time, began to see a future where I wasn't defined by my stepmother’s slights or my sister’s jealousy.

But the peace was fragile. The rest of the family—the ones who saw the Sterling connection as a threat to their own standing—were beginning to circle.
