Chapter 5 - The Unmasking

The stability I had built in the Sterling estate was a ticking clock. My family, unable to fathom how I had moved from the "invisible nurse" to the personal confidante of the Sterling heir, began to manufacture their own narrative. It started with subtle rumors—whispers at galas that I was "manipulating" a vulnerable, sick young man for money. Then, it turned into direct aggression.
Clara, now deeply uncomfortable that her "joke" had backfired, decided to launch an offensive. She arrived at the Sterling estate unannounced, draped in designer clothes and wearing a look of rehearsed concern.
"I'm here to save my stepsister," she told the head of security, playing the role of the worried sibling perfectly.
She cornered me in the sunroom, where Julian and I were reviewing his physical therapy progress. He was standing on his own, a massive milestone, and the sunlight catching the room made the atmosphere feel unusually hopeful.
"Jenna, honey," Clara cooed, though her eyes were cold, scanning the room to see what kind of "lifestyle" I had stolen for myself. "You’ve really gone too far this time. Making yourself the center of the Sterling family's attention? Dad is furious. You're making us look like social climbers."
Julian stiffened, his hand gripping the arm of his chair. He was still physically weak, but his spirit was sharper than ever. Before I could respond, he spoke up, his voice clear and resonant.
"Is that why you're here, Clara? To protect your reputation?" Julian asked, his voice dripping with newfound strength. "Because from where I'm standing, Jenna is the only person who has treated me like a human being since the day I got sick. While you were busy making jokes at weddings, she was learning the rhythm of my heart."
Clara’s jaw dropped. She looked at me, then at Julian, realization dawning on her that the power dynamic had shifted irrevocably. She tried to pivot, pulling out her phone to show some doctored text messages—anything to smear my character.
"She's just a nurse, Julian! She doesn't know your business, she doesn't know who we are!"
"She knows exactly who you are," I interrupted, stepping forward. I felt no fear. The girl who had sat in the back of the room at the wedding, hiding her tears, was gone. "And for the first time, Clara, you don't get to decide who I am. You don't get to crop me out of this picture."
The confrontation was interrupted by the arrival of Mr. Sterling. He stood in the doorway, his presence sucking the air out of the room. He didn't say a word to Clara. He simply looked at me, then at Julian, and gave a slight, proud nod. He turned his gaze toward my stepsister.

"If you ever step foot on my property again to disparage the woman who saved my son’s future," he said, his voice terrifyingly calm, "I will ensure that your family’s business becomes a case study in how to lose everything in a single week."
Clara fled, her composure shattered. But the damage had been done; she had signaled that my family was going to war.
