Chapter 6 - The Trap is Sprung

The double doors of the study flew open with a thunderous bang.
Four uniformed federal agents, led by two senior detectives from the NYPD Special Victims Unit, poured into the room, their weapons drawn and badges flashing under the chandelier light.
"Federal agents! Don't move! Hands where we can see them!"
Dr. Vance instantly dropped his briefcase, his hands flying into the air, his body trembling violently. "I'm a physician! I was manipulated! She hired me! It was all her idea!"
"You cowardly bastard!" Victoria screamed, turning on him like a rabid animal, her nails clawing toward his face before an officer grabbed her arm and forced her back. "You promised me this was foolproof! You said the chemical wouldn't leave a trail!"
"Victoria Vance, you are under arrest for federal child exploitation, conspiracy to commit grand fraud, attempted murder, and criminal poisoning," the lead detective announced, pulling her wrists behind her back and slapping cold, steel handcuffs over her manicured wrists.
"Get your filthy hands off me!" Victoria shrieked, twisting frantically in the officer's grip. She looked at me, her face contorted with pure, unadulterated hatred. "James! Tell them to stop! You can't do this to me! I'm your fiancée! I was going to be your wife!"
I walked up to her, stopping just inches from where she was pinned by the federal officers.
"You were never going to be my wife, Victoria," I said, my voice cold as stone. "You were a parasite that crept into my house, mistook my grief for weakness, and tried to destroy my innocent six-year-old child for a stack of green paper."
"He's a useless, weak little brat!" she spat, dropping all pretense, her eyes bulging with venomous rage. "He ruined everything! He was always in the way! You spent more time worrying about his stupid tears than looking at me! He deserved every single second of that pain!"
A cold, dark urge surged through me, but I kept my composure. I looked her dead in the eye and leaned in close.
"Do you know what the best part of today is, Victoria?" I whispered softly. "Your offshore creditors found out three hours ago that your engagement to me is off. They know you have zero access to my wealth or Sarah's trust. They're waiting for you."
Her eyes widened in absolute, sheer horror as the full weight of her reality crashed down upon her. The police, the prison sentence, the multi-million-dollar debts, the dangerous people she owed money to—she was completely, irrevocably ruined.
"No... no, no, please! James! Please protect me!" she began to wail, her bitter rage instantly evaporating into pathetic, snotty sobbing. "Don't let them take me! James! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"
"Take them away," I ordered the officers without looking back.
The police dragged Victoria and Dr. Vance out of the study, their screams and frantic pleas echoing down the long, marble corridors of the mansion until the front doors slammed shut, plunging the house into a heavy, peaceful silence.
I stood alone in the study for a long moment, staring at the empty desk. The storm had passed, but the air still felt thick with the memory of the poison that had almost destroyed my family.
The door softly clicked open behind me.
I turned around. Clara was standing in the doorway, holding a warm cup of coffee in her hands.
"They're gone, sir," she said softly.
"Yes," I breathed, running a hand through my hair, feeling an immense weight lift off my shoulders. "They're gone."
"How is Leo?" I asked.
Clara smiled—a genuine, radiant smile that warmed the entire room. "He woke up twenty minutes ago, Mr. Sterling. He looked out the window, saw the sun coming up, and asked if he could draw a picture of a triceratops."

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes again, but this time, they weren't tears of guilt. They were tears of profound relief.
"Come with me, Clara," I said, stepping toward her. "There's something I need to do."
