Chapter 7 - The Downfall

By noon, the financial news networks were in a state of absolute frenzy.
BILLIONAIRE JAMES STERLING’S FIANCÉE ARRESTED IN MASSIVE CHILD POISONING AND CONSPIRACY PLOT. PROMINENT MANHATTAN NEUROLOGIST FACES LIFE IN PRISON.
Sitting in my high-rise executive office overlooking Wall Street, I watched the television screen on the wall.
Live footage showed Victoria being escorted in an orange prison jumpsuit into the federal courthouse, her head bowed, her face covered by her hands to shield herself from the barrage of news cameras and shouting reporters.
"Miss Vance! Did you poison Leo Sterling for his trust fund?!" "How much money did you owe the Miami cartels?!" "Do you have anything to say to James Sterling?!"
She offered no answers. Her family in Greenwich had issued a public statement disowning her completely, revoking her trust access, and declaring they would not pay her legal bail. She was isolated, penniless, facing up to forty years in a maximum-security federal facility without the possibility of parole.
David Coleman, my chief legal counsel, stepped into the office and set a thick leather binder on my desk.
"Every single asset Victoria held has been frozen, James," David reported. "We've seized her luxury apartment, her jewelry, and her vehicle to offset the legal expenses incurred during the investigation. Furthermore, Dr. Arthur Vance's medical license has been permanently revoked by the State of New York, and he is currently negotiating a guilty plea to avoid a fifty-year sentence."
"What about Leo's medical status?" I asked, keeping my focus on what truly mattered.
"Dr. Evans submitted his final medical report this morning," David smiled broadly. "The chemical irritant has completely flushed from Leo’s system. The nerve inflammation in his scalp and neck is ninety percent healed. There will be no long-term physical damage whatsoever."
I closed my eyes and breathed a long, deep sigh of relief.
"And the independent board of Sarah's trust?"
"The board held an emergency meeting two hours ago," David said. "In light of your decisive action and protection of the heir, they have officially restructured the trust parameters. All administrative control has been locked under a three-party ethical oversight committee, ensuring no future spouse or third party can ever tamper with the inheritance again."
"Good," I said, standing up from my executive desk and putting on my suit jacket. "Cancel my meetings for the rest of the week, David."
David looked surprised. "Sir? You have the Q3 earnings call with the European investors tomorrow morning. It’s worth sixty million dollars."

I looked at him and smiled—a real, genuine smile.
"Let the vice president handle it," I said smoothly. "I have something far more important to do."
