Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

By Tuesday morning, the scandal had exploded across every major news network in the tri-state area.

WALL STREET HEIR AND PROMINENT SOCIALITE ARRESTED IN CHILLING PLOT TO ABANDON INFANT IN ROASTING CAR.

Headlines blared across television screens in every diner, airport, and office building in Manhattan. Sterling Enterprises’ stock plummeted twenty-four points within the first hour of trading as investors panicked over the unfolding criminal investigation.

Eleanor Sterling had cracked within ten minutes of interrogation. Faced with the unyielding evidence of the hidden garage camera, she had pointed the finger straight at her son, swearing to detectives that Tyler was the mastermind who had engineered the entire plot to avoid paying alimony and child support during an impending, messy divorce.

Tyler, realizing his mother had thrown him under the bus, retaliated by releasing his own set of text message logs to the district attorney—messages proving that Vanessa, his mistress, had helped coordinate the logistics of the hit and had even rented the vehicle used to block Rachel’s car in the driveway.

The house of cards they had built upon greed, arrogance, and cruelty was collapsing in on itself.

I sat at the kitchen table in my home, sipping a cup of coffee while watching the morning news broadcast replay footage of Vanessa being led out of her luxury apartment in handcuffs, her face hidden behind an oversized Gucci handbag.

My phone rang. It was Detective Vance.

“Diane,” the detective’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and satisfied. “We’ve executed search warrants on Tyler’s corporate offices and his secondary residence in the Hamptons. Guess what we found in his safe?”

“What?” I asked, leaning forward.

“A draft agreement transferring all of Rachel’s personal inheritance—including the trust left to her by your late husband—directly into a shell corporation controlled by Eleanor. They weren't just trying to get rid of Rachel; they were systematically robbing her blind.”

“Can it be reversed?”

“It’s already frozen by a federal judge,” Vance replied. “With the security footage, the bank records, and Eleanor’s full confession, their legal team doesn't have a leg to stand on. They’re looking at twenty to life for conspiracy and attempted homicide.”

“Good,” I said firmly. “Let them rot.”

“How is Rachel holding up?”

“She’s resting. Every time she looks at Lily, she cries, but they’re tears of gratitude. She’s strong, Detective. Stronger than any of them ever gave her credit for.”

“Well, tell her she won't have to look over her shoulder much longer. The arraignment is scheduled for Thursday morning, and the DA is pushing for zero bail given flight risk.”

After hanging up, I walked upstairs to check on the nursery.

Rachel was sitting in the rocking chair, cradling little Lily against her chest. The morning sun poured through the sheer white curtains, casting a warm, golden glow across the room. My late husband had painted these walls a soft, welcoming yellow before he passed away, never knowing how deeply his foresight would protect the people he loved most.

“Mom,” Rachel looked up, a soft smile touching her lips. “The lawyer called. Tyler’s assets have been frozen. The judge granted an immediate, expedited restraining order and temporary sole custody.”

“It’s over, sweetie,” I said, walking over and resting my hand on her shoulder. “You won.”

“We won,” Rachel corrected softly, looking down at her daughter. “And we’re never going back.”
