Chapter 7 - The Interrogation Room Flashbacks

Behind closed doors, as the trial neared its inevitable conclusion, the Sterling alliance completely disintegrated under the pressure of mounting federal indictments.

In a holding cell down at the federal penitentiary holding facility, Tyler and his mother were allowed a brief, supervised meeting to discuss plea negotiations—a meeting recorded by prison authorities and later leaked to the prosecution.

“This is all your fault, Mother!” Tyler snarled, slamming his fist against the metal table so hard the guards instinctively reached for their batons. “If you hadn't insisted on handling it yourself—if you hadn't left your fingerprints on that key fob—we wouldn't be looking at twenty-five years!”

Eleanor, whose pristine gray hair was now unkempt and whose designer suit was wrinkled, looked at her son with undisguised contempt.

“My fault?” Eleanor sneered, her voice dripping with venom. “I built this empire for you, Tyler. I covered up your debts, I bailed you out of your college scandals, and I tried to clean up the mess you made when you married a woman beneath your social standing! You’re the one who couldn't even manage a simple divorce without turning it into a criminal circus!”

“I wanted her gone!” Tyler shouted, his face turning purple with rage. “And you told me you’d take care of it!”

“And I would have,” Eleanor hissed back, leaning across the table, “if your mother-in-law hadn't installed a redundant security lens in a garage light fixture like a paranoid old fool!”

The guards stepped in, separating the two before physical blows could be exchanged. But the damage was done. Their toxic codependency, built on decades of entitlement and shared criminality, had finally imploded into mutual destruction.

When the prosecution played snippets of that audio recording during closing arguments, the jury didn't even need to deliberate for an hour.

The conspiracy was real. The malice was absolute. And the guilt was beyond any shadow of a doubt.
