Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The chaos that erupted in the private dining room was swift and absolute.
"You can't do this! Do you know who I am?!" Gavin screamed, thrashing wildly as the two uniformed officers pinned his arms behind his back and snapped the steel cuffs around his wrists. "This is a civil matter! This is a family dispute! You're making a massive mistake!"
"There's no mistake, Mr. Lawson," Detective Vance replied smoothly, patting him down with practiced efficiency. "We’ve had an active financial warrant out for your corporate accounts since Tuesday morning, and the security footage of you assaulting your wife five minutes ago just upgraded this to a felony domestic arrest without bail."
Florence shrieked, lunging toward the officers like a cornered animal. "Leave my son alone! You corrupt pigs! She set him up! That old judge planned this entire thing!"
"Ma'am, if you take one more step forward, I will arrest you for obstruction of justice and accessory to financial fraud," the second officer warned, fixing Florence with a glare so cold it stopped her dead in her tracks.
Walter Lawson—who had remained silent at the far end of the table throughout the entire dinner, staring miserably at his water glass—slowly shook his head. He didn't look up as his son was dragged past him toward the exit doors.
"It's over, Margaret," Walter muttered quietly to his wife, his voice broken and hollow. "We lost."
Hannah stood beside me, watching the man who had terrorized her for five years being led out in handcuffs. The man who had screamed at her, belittled her, and used physical intimidation to crush her spirit was now reduced to a whimpering, panicked coward begging for his mother’s help.
As the doors closed behind them, cutting off Gavin’s frantic shouting, a profound, heavy silence settled over the room.
Hannah exhaled a long, shuddering breath. She looked down at her hands—the same hands that had spent years trembling under Gavin’s critical gaze—and slowly turned them over.
"Mom," Hannah whispered, her voice cracking slightly as tears welled in her eyes once more, though this time they were tears of pure, unadulterated release. "I'm... I'm free."
"You were always free, sweetheart," I said softly, wrapping my arms around her in a tight, fierce embrace. "You just forgot your own strength for a little while."
The restaurant manager stepped forward, holding a pristine velvet folder. "Mrs. Vance, your car is waiting outside. We’ve already arranged for private security to escort you and your daughter away from the paparazzi and reporters gathering outside the front entrance."
May you like
"Thank you, Thomas," I nodded, releasing Hannah and gathering my briefcase. "Send the full, unedited surveillance package directly to the District Attorney's office within the hour."
"Consider it done, Judge Vance," the manager replied respectfully.
