Chapter 6 - The Arraignment

The Marion County Superior Courtroom was packed to capacity on a crisp Thursday morning.

Reporters, legal analysts, and curious onlookers filled the wooden benches, whispering excitedly as the bailiff called the court to order.

At the defense table sat Gavin Lawson. He looked a shadow of his former self. His expensive Italian suit was rumpled, his hair unstyled, and dark, hollow circles carved deep beneath his bloodshot eyes. He hadn't posted bail; Vance Global’s corporate freeze and the federal asset seizure orders had locked down every cent he owned, leaving him entirely dependent on a court-appointed public defender who looked thoroughly exhausted by his client's endless complaints.

Sitting across the aisle in the prosecution advisory section, Hannah and I walked in side by side.

Hannah wore a sharp, elegant ivory blazer and tailored trousers. She walked with her head held high, radiating a quiet, unshakeable confidence that commanded the respect of everyone in the room. As we took our seats, several reporters turned their cameras toward us, capturing the stark contrast between the empowered daughter and the broken abuser sitting across the aisle.

Gavin caught sight of Hannah as she settled into her seat. His face twisted in a desperate, pleading expression. He half-raised a handcuffed wrist as if to call out to her, but stopped when he met her cold, indifferent gaze.

She didn't glare at him. She didn't look angry. She simply looked at him the way a senior medical professional looks at a discarded piece of medical waste—with total, absolute irrelevance.

The judge—a former colleague of mine whom I had mentored decades ago—entered the courtroom with firm, deliberate steps.

"All rise for the Superior Court of Marion County," the bailiff boomed.

Everyone stood. The judge took his seat behind the heavy mahogany bench, adjusting his glasses as he scanned the case files before him.

"Please be seated," the judge said, his voice deep and authoritative. "We are here for the arraignment and bond review in the matter of State versus Gavin Lawson. Defense, you have the floor."

Gavin’s public defender stood up, nervously clearing his throat. "Your Honor, the defense moves for a reduction of bail and requests release on own recognizance, citing my client’s lack of prior criminal history and willingness to cooperate with financial restitution proceedings..."

For twenty minutes, the defense droned on, attempting to paint Gavin as a misunderstood, high-achieving corporate professional who had merely suffered a "severe domestic misunderstanding."

When the defense finally finished, the judge turned his gaze toward the prosecution team, then looked directly at me sitting in the gallery. A subtle, knowing nod passed between us—decades of judicial integrity recognizing an open-and-shut case of systemic abuse.

"The motion to reduce bail is denied," the judge announced, his voice ringing out with absolute finality. "Given the severity of the documented physical violence, the premeditated nature of the financial fraud, and the clear flight risk presented by international crypto accounts, the defendant will be held without bail pending trial."

Gavin slumped forward in his chair, burying his face in his cuffed hands as a muffled sob escaped his lips.

Florence, sitting alone in the back row of the gallery without her husband—who had refused to accompany her—covered her mouth with a shaking hand, realizing that her son’s golden-boy illusion was permanently shattered.
