Chapter 3 - The Price of Silence

The first cracks in my resolve appeared three days later when my stepmother, Sarah, visited. She sat in the sterile visiting room of the shelter, clutching her designer handbag as if it were a life raft.

"You don't understand the damage you're doing, Maya," she whispered, leaning in. "Derek is young. He made a mistake. If you press charges, you ruin his future, and the family reputation will never recover. We can settle this privately. Just tell the police it was a misunderstanding, a fight that got out of hand."

Her eyes were pleading, but they were devoid of any concern for my physical pain or the terror I had lived through. To her, I was an inconvenience. "He hit me, Sarah," I said, my voice surprisingly steady. "He broke my ribs. He tried to control everything I have. You’re asking me to trade my life for a reputation?"

"I'm asking you to be reasonable!" she hissed.

"I am being reasonable," I replied, standing up to signal the end of the conversation. "I’m being reasonable with the law."

After she left, I felt a tremor of doubt. Could I really do this? Was I strong enough to face the weight of my own family's expectations? I found my answer later that evening in a crumpled pamphlet Elena had given me. It was for a pro-bono legal clinic specializing in financial abuse. I dialed the number, my hand steadying as the phone rang. A lawyer named Marcus answered. By the time I hung up, I wasn't just a victim; I was a plaintiff.
