Chapter 5 - The Fractured Facade

The trial took place on a day of torrential rain, the weather mirroring the heavy atmosphere that blanketed the courtroom. I sat in the witness box, feeling as though every pair of eyes in the room was piercing through my thin, protective exterior. Across from me sat Derek, dressed in an expensive suit, his hair meticulously groomed—the perfect image of the man my family had desperately tried to uphold before the public eye.
When Marcus called my name, my footsteps on the wooden floor sounded hollow and distant. I looked straight into Derek’s eyes. The usual arrogance was gone; his gaze flickered, a hidden panic struggling to remain buried beneath his icy demeanor.
"Maya, can you describe the events of the night of May 12th?" Marcus asked, his voice steady and steely.
I took a deep breath. The image of the living room, the sound of Derek’s screaming, and the agonizing sensation of my ribs cracking returned, vivid as if it had happened moments ago. I no longer stammered as I had during our initial rehearsals. I recounted everything: how he manipulated my bank accounts, how he threatened to hollow out my entire life, and how he believed I would forever be a pawn in his game.

Derek’s defense attorney tried to interrupt, painting a picture of a "traumatized young woman" who was merely confused. But Marcus shut them down with irrefutable financial evidence: copies of statements from shell companies and the very emails Derek had sent using my identity to launder funds.
As I stepped down from the witness stand, I glanced toward the family bench. Sarah was still sitting there, her eyes red, but not from concern for me. She was looking at Derek with profound fear—not because her son might go to prison, but because the truth about our family's "empire" was being laid bare before the business partners sitting in the back row. That perfect, curated facade had finally shattered into pieces.
