Chapter 6 - Shadows over Madison

An hour later, the room was locked down. Two Madison police officers stood guard outside Ethan’s door, under strict orders from the district attorney’s office to let no one inside except authorized hospital staff.

In the small staff breakroom down the hall, I sat across a laminate table from Mark, Dr. Evelyn Hayes, and Elena Gomez, the investigative journalist.

Elena had set a laptop on the table, displaying a complex web of corporate registries, offshore holdings, and old medical licensing files.

“Apex BioSciences isn't just a medical tech firm,” Elena explained, tapping her pen on the screen. “Ten years ago, they were running a classified, off-the-books research project called Project Prometheus. It was headed by Dr. Richard Vance—the surgeon who operated on Ethan.”

“What was the goal of the project?” I asked, holding a paper cup of lukewarm coffee that I hadn't touched.

“Targeted genetic tissue regeneration,” Elena said grave face. “Apex was trying to create bio-synthetic organs that could be implanted into infants to cure fatal congenital defects. But to make the bio-grafts work without organ rejection, they needed specialized stem cell matrices derived from a specific, ultra-rare genetic donor pool.”

Mark looked up, his brow furrowed. “What donor pool?”

Elena flipped to another document on her screen—a sealed court deposition from a 2018 whistle-blower lawsuit that Apex had managed to pay millions to suppress.

“Dr. Vance wasn't just using synthetic material,” Elena revealed, her voice dropping. “To make the graft take hold in Ethan’s body, Vance harvested donor genetic material from an elite, high-value genetic line—a donor whose cellular profile possessed a rare immune-evasion mutation. Vance secretly injected those specialized donor stem cells into Ethan’s mesenteric artery during the operation to ensure the synthetic graft wouldn't be rejected by his body.”

I gasped, the truth striking me like a physical blow.

“That’s why his paternal DNA didn't match Mark!” I cried out. “The donor stem cells Vance injected ten years ago took over part of Ethan’s cellular regeneration! His blood and immune system were partially rewritten by the donor material!”

“Precisely,” Dr. Hayes agreed, nodding solemnly. “It’s a rare phenomenon known as secondary genetic chimerism. Mark is Ethan’s biological father—conceived naturally by your family. But the donor stem cells introduced by Vance integrated so deeply into Ethan’s bone marrow and blood creation centers that standard DNA tests read the donor’s genetic signature instead of Mark’s.”

Mark buried his face in his hands, letting out a long, ragged sob. “Oh God... Ethan is mine. He’s really mine.”

I reached across the table, laying my hand over Mark’s trembling knuckles. The cold anger that had gripped my heart since the ultrasound began to melt away, replaced by an overwhelming wave of fierce, protective unity. Mark hadn't betrayed me. He had been a terrified young father tricked by predatory scientists who used our dying baby as a living test tube.

“Where is Dr. Vance now?” Mark asked, looking up at Elena with burning eyes.

“He vanished six years ago when Apex shut down Project Prometheus,” Elena said. “Public records say he retired. But my sources in the medical board say he’s living off-grid in a cabin near Devils Lake, Wisconsin—hiding from Apex because he knew too much.”

I stood up from the table, my posture straight, my eyes blazing with determination.

“We’re going to find Dr. Vance,” I declared. “We need his testimony, his original lab notes, and his medical records before Apex silences him forever. It’s the only way to save Ethan from their lawyers—and make sure no other child ever suffers like our boy did.”
