Chapter 8 - The Whistleblower’s Ledger

The inside of the cabin was cluttered with thousands of books, yellowed medical journals, and stacks of hand-written ledgers stretching from floor to ceiling. A roaring fire crackled in the stone fireplace, throwing long, dancing shadows across the room.
Vance sat in a worn leather armchair, pouring himself a glass of whiskey with shaking hands.
“I was a pioneer,” Vance said softly, looking into the fire. “Or at least, that’s what Apex told me when they funded my research lab at Saint Jude’s. They promised me unlimited resources to solve infant vascular malformations. But when the bio-synthetic matrix failed in animal trials, the CEO of Apex—a man named Victor Thorne—forced us to move to human subjects.”
“Project Prometheus,” Elena said, holding up her recording device.
“Yes,” Vance nodded, a tear tracking down through his gray beard. “We screened hundreds of infant medical emergencies. When Ethan came in ten years ago with a fatal mesenteric anomaly... I knew he wouldn't survive the night. I believed—god help me, I really believed—that my graft was his only chance.”
“And the donor stem cells?” Mark demanded, standing over Vance’s chair. “Why did you alter his genetics?”
“Because the synthetic matrix required an active biological sheath to prevent the body’s immune system from destroying it,” Vance explained. “We used a specialized, engineered donor line developed in Apex’s private Swiss labs. I knew it would cause genetic chimerism in his blood work. That’s why I altered Ethan’s birth registry—to hide the experiment from state inspectors and protect the firm from an immediate federal raid.”
Vance looked up at me, his eyes filled with genuine remorse.
“I survived off their blood money for five years,” Vance whispered. “Until I saw what Apex was planning to do next. They weren't trying to save babies, Mrs. Mitchell. They were patenting synthetic organ profiles so they could sell subscription-based biological enhancements to the ultra-wealthy. They turned human children into proprietary prototype hardware.”
He stood up, walked over to a heavy iron safe hidden behind a bookshelf, and dialed the combination.
He pulled out a thick, leather-bound binder with a heavy brass lock, alongside a encrypted silver hard drive.
“Everything is in here,” Vance said, holding out the drive and binder to me. “The original laboratory protocols, the unedited surgical logs from Saint Jude’s, Victor Thorne’s signed directives, and the complete genetic donor mapping that proves Ethan is your biological child. This is the evidence that will destroy Apex BioSciences forever.”
Before I could take the drive, the cabin’s front window shattered inward in a shower of flying glass.
A sharp, metallic pop echoed through the room, and a tear gas canister landed on the rug, spewing thick, white, blinding smoke into the air.
Outside, heavy footsteps slammed onto the wooden porch.
“Police! Nobody move!” a harsh voice bellowed through a loudspeaker.
But it wasn't the police.

Through the thick smoke, three heavily armed men in unmarked black tactical gear, wearing night-vision goggles and holding assault rifles, kicked open the front door.
Apex’s private strike team had arrived.
