Chapter 6 - The Bloodline Secret

When Sawyer regained consciousness, the harsh fluorescent lights of a hospital examination room replaced the dark corridor floor.

He tried to sit up, a sharp pain radiating through his bruised knees and lower back. An IV line was taped to the back of his right hand.

“Easy, Mr. Hale. You gave the nursing staff quite a scare.”

Dr. Aris Thorne, a distinguished gray-haired neurologist who had overseen Sawyer’s case since the accident, stood beside the hospital bed holding a clipboard.

Sawyer ignored the doctor’s warning, swinging his legs over the edge of the examination table. His legs remained stubbornly, uselessly heavy. A wave of bitter frustration washed over him, but he forced it down.

“Elena,” Sawyer rasped, his throat bone-dry. “How is she?”

Dr. Thorne’s expression sobered immediately. He set the clipboard down on the tray table.

“She’s resting, Sawyer. Her pneumonia is severe, complicated by advanced cardiac failure. The medical team is doing everything they can, but... well, you know how fragile recovery is when the body has already given up its fight.”

Sawyer gripped the edge of the table. “And the girls?”

“They’re currently in the family lounge with your driver, drinking hot chocolate,” Dr. Thorne said gently. Then, the doctor’s expression shifted into something deeply intense. He picked up a manila envelope from the counter. “Which brings me to the reason I ran a STAT lab panel while you were unconscious.”

Sawyer looked up, narrowing his eyes. “What are you talking about?”

Dr. Thorne pulled a printed document from the folder and handed it to him.

At the top of the page, bold letters read: PATERNITY VERIFICATION ASSAY — DNA PHENOTYPE MATCH.

Sawyer’s eyes scanned the data columns. Probability of biological paternity: 99.9998%.

The room seemed to spin.

“When you collapsed in the hallway,” Dr. Thorne explained quietly, “we ran routine trauma labs. Given your prior neurological history and the genetic markers on file from your marital medical registry with Caroline, our lab technician noticed an anomaly in your blood panel cross-referenced with admission intake data from the twins.”

“Lila and June...” Sawyer breathed, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. “They’re mine.”

“Biologically, yes,” Dr. Thorne confirmed. “Conceived roughly seven years ago, based on their age. It appears Elena gave birth to them in secret, raising them on her own while keeping them entirely off the grid until her health failed.”

Sawyer stared at the paper. The illusion of his solitary life, the comfortable grief he had wrapped around himself like a shield since Caroline’s death, evaporated in a single second.

He wasn't just a wealthy, broken man who had picked up two stray kids in the rain.

He was a father. A father who had missed seven years of his daughters’ lives because of secrets, pride, and the relentless march of time.

“Does she know?” Sawyer asked, his voice trembling. “Does Elena know that I know?”

“Not yet,” Dr. Thorne said. “She’s been asking for you, Sawyer. For three days, before she lost consciousness, she kept saying the same thing: ‘He has to find them before Victor does.’”

Sawyer froze. “Victor? What does Victor Vance have to do with this?”

Before Dr. Thorne could answer, the door to the examination room slammed open.

Standing in the doorway was Victor Vance himself, wearing an expensive cashmere overcoat, flanked by two corporate security guards and a sleek, high-priced family law attorney holding a thick leather briefcase.

“Well, well, well,” Victor sneered, stepping into the room with a predatory grin. “Looks like the family reunion is already underway. Too bad you won't be around to enjoy it, Sawyer.”
