Chapter 10 - The House on the Hill Awakens

Six months later, the Silicon Valley morning was brilliant and clear, devoid of rain or shadows.
On the sweeping lawn of the mansion on the hill, the grass was green and manicured. Inside the grand kitchen, the smell of pancakes, fresh coffee, and burnt toast filled the air as Martha hummed a tune by the stove.
In the center of the expansive living room, Sawyer Hale stood tall, leaning slightly on a wooden cane, watching two little girls race each other around the polished marble coffee table.
Elena was there too.
Following a miraculous, grueling regimen of experimental therapy and intensive medical treatment funded by Hale Technologies and driven by sheer maternal and paternal will, Elena had beaten the odds. She sat on the velvet sofa, wrapped in a warm cashmere shawl, watching her daughters laugh with a peace that surpassed all understanding.
Victor Vance was long gone—serving a federal prison sentence for corporate fraud and witness tampering, his shares completely absorbed by the newly restructured Hale-Vance family trust.
“You’re staring,” Elena teased softly, looking up as Sawyer walked over to her, his gait steady and strong, the wheelchair permanently folded and stored away in the back of the garage.
“I’m just making sure this isn't a dream,” Sawyer said, sitting down beside her on the sofa and pulling her close against his side.
Lila and June sprinted across the room, tumbling onto the rug right in front of them, holding up a freshly drawn picture of a castle with four people standing proudly at the door, surrounded by golden rectangles of sunlight.
“See?” Lila said, looking up at Sawyer with a triumphant grin. “I told you I knew how to fix it.”

Sawyer smiled, pressing a kiss to the top of his daughter’s head, feeling the warmth of the sun and the steady, unbroken beat of his own heart.
The ghost was gone. The house on the hill had finally awakened.
