Chapter 7 - The Grand Exposure

Chaos erupted in the ballroom.

Journalists scrambled for their cameras, flashbulbs exploding like a rapid-fire thunderstorm. Shouts of shock and confusion bounced off the walls.

Preston stumbled backward away from the podium, his legs tangling in the microphone cords as he pointed a trembling, manicured finger at me.

“She’s... she’s an imposter!” Preston screamed, his voice cracking with sheer panic, abandoning all pretense of his composed hero persona. “Security! Remove her! She’s crazy! Tara is dead!”

Two burly hotel security guards rushed down the aisle toward me, their hands outstretched to grab my arms.

Before they could touch me, Wyatt stepped out from the shadows near the side entrance, flashing an official badge and a federal warrant signed by the state attorney general.

“Stand down, officers,” Wyatt commanded, his voice carrying the authority of a seasoned investigator. “Federal and state authorities have taken control of this venue.”

The security guards hesitated, looking between Wyatt and the stunned crowd.

I kept walking, ascending the grand staircase to the stage until I was standing face-to-face with the man who had tried to burn me alive.

Preston backed away until his spine hit the mahogany podium, panting heavily, sweat pouring down his forehead.

“Tara... how... how is this possible?” he whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely form the words. “I saw the death certificate... I held your ashes...”

“You didn't hold my ashes, Preston. You held a bag of sand, just like the lies you’ve built your entire life upon,” I said, my voice cutting through the silent room like a razor blade.

I turned my gaze toward Khloe, who was now desperately trying to slip toward the side exit.

“Stop right there, Khloe,” I called out, my voice stopping her dead in her tracks. “Don't worry, we didn't forget about you. Especially not the backup pearl bracelet you wore out of my dressing room while you wedged a luggage rack against my door to trap me inside.”

The crowd gasped. Murmurs of outrage surged through the room.

I turned back to Preston, opening the thick manila envelope I carried.

“For the past month, while you were playing the grieving widower and liquidating my assets, the FBI, the state fire marshal, and an independent forensic audit team have been very busy,” I announced loudly, holding up the documents for the cameras to capture.

“Here is the official fire marshal report proving that the fire in the bridal suite was intentional arson—ignited using chemical accelerant poured outside my door. Here are the security camera stills showing Khloe blocking my exit while you deliberately chose to rescue her instead of your bride. Here are the wire transfer logs proving you’ve been embezzling from my business accounts for years. And finally...”

I pulled out one last sheet of paper, letting it catch the stage lights.

“Here is the formal federal indictment for attempted murder, insurance fraud, forgery, and conspiracy against both Preston Hale and Khloe Vance.”

The silence in the room was absolute.

Before Preston could lunge or speak another word, two federal marshals stepped onto the stage, sliding heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, echoing click.

Khloe burst into hysterical, theatrical tears as another officer detained her, dragging her away in disgrace as the camera flashes blinded them both.

I stood alone in the center of the stage, breathing in the clean, unsmoked air, feeling the crushing weight of the past lift completely off my shoulders.
