Chapter 8 - A New Dawn

Six months later.
The courtroom in downtown Denver was quiet, filled with the respectful hush of justice being properly served.
The federal judge’s gavel came down with a sharp, final crack that echoed through the wood-paneled room.
Bang.
“For the charges of attempted murder, arson, financial fraud, and conspiracy, this court sentences Preston Hale to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Khloe Vance is sentenced to fifteen years for her direct complicity and theft.”
As the bailiffs led Preston away in an orange jumpsuit—his medals stripped, his reputation shattered, and his arrogant veneer completely destroyed—he didn't look at me. He kept his head bowed, swallowed entirely by the consequences of his own monstrous greed.
I walked out of the courthouse doors into the bright, warm afternoon sunlight, pausing on the stone steps to take a deep, liberating breath.
My architectural firm was fully restored to my name, expanded, and thriving better than ever. The dark chapter of my past was officially closed, locked away behind thick prison bars where it belonged.
Footsteps approached behind me, and a familiar, warm hand slid gently into mine.
I turned my head and smiled.
Wyatt stood beside me, wearing a sharp civilian suit instead of his firefighter turnout gear, his eyes shining with pride and affection. He had resigned from the department after the trial to join my firm as a project manager, trading hoses and ladders for blueprints and steel beams.
“Ready to go home, boss?” Wyatt asked softly, a playful smile touching his lips.

“Always,” I replied, interlocking my fingers tightly with his.
We walked down the courthouse steps together, stepping out toward a bright, unclouded horizon where the fire could no longer reach us, ready to build a brand-new life from the very ground up.
