Chapter 4 - The Montgomery Empire Strikes

By eight o'clock the following morning, the news of Vanessa Hayes’s arrest had exploded across every major news outlet and social media platform in the city.
SOCIETY MATRIARCH ARRESTED FOR FELONY ASSAULT ON CHILD.
The tabloids were having a field day, but behind the scenes, the Montgomery family machine was moving with terrifying speed.
Nathan walked into the glass-walled headquarters of Hayes & Montgomery Development, holding a leather folder. Beside him walked Evelyn Vance. The moment he stepped into the lobby, he could feel the shift in the atmosphere. The security guards looked away, and the executives whispering near the coffee station fell dead silent.
As Nathan reached his top-floor executive suite, the door to the main boardroom slammed open.
Harrison Montgomery stepped out. At sixty-five, Harrison was a ruthless titan of industry—a man with silver hair, a predatory posture, and an absolute conviction that everything and everyone had a price tag.
"In my office. Now," Harrison barked, turning on his heel.
Nathan didn't hesitate. He walked into the boardroom, standing across the massive mahogany table while Evelyn stood quietly near the door.
"You've made a catastrophic mistake, Nathan," Harrison began, his voice dripping with condescension as he adjusted his gold cufflinks. "You let a hysterical maid and a low-class scandal ruin a ten-year business alliance. Vanessa is my daughter. Whatever happened in that house yesterday was a minor domestic disagreement that could have been handled quietly."
"A minor disagreement?" Nathan repeated, his voice dangerously low. "She hit an eight-year-old child with a golf club, Harrison. She hit my daughter."
"That child is an illegitimate anchor designed to extort this family!" Harrison snapped, slamming his palm onto the table. "I don't care whose blood she carries! Vanessa is out on bail as of an hour ago. You will release a public statement declaring that the incident was a misunderstanding caused by an intruder, or I will initiate a hostile takeover of this firm by five o'clock today."
Harrison pulled a document from his coat. "I hold the primary lines of credit for your current three-hundred-million-dollar waterfront project. If I pull my backing, Hayes Development goes bankrupt by the end of the week. You'll be broke, ruined, and unable to afford a traffic lawyer, let alone a custody battle."
Nathan looked at Harrison for a long, silent moment. Then, to Harrison’s surprise, Nathan smiled—a cold, ruthless smile that Harrison had never seen on his son-in-law's face before.
"Did you really think I didn't prepare for this day, Harrison?" Nathan asked calmly.
Nathan pulled a tablet from his briefcase and tapped the screen, sliding it across the polished table.
"What is this?" Harrison frowned, looking down at the screen.
"That," Evelyn spoke up from the door, "is a copy of the federal whistle-blower complaint filed two hours ago with the Securities and Exchange Commission. It details fifteen years of offshore tax evasion, land-zoning bribery, and systematic wire fraud committed by Montgomery Holdings—specifically authorized by you."
Harrison’s face turned an ugly shade of plum. "This is bluffing! You don't have access to my private ledgers!"
"Vanessa had access," Nathan said coldly. "She kept copies of your illegal transfers in our home safe as insurance against you in case you ever cut her out of your estate. I opened that safe last night, Harrison."
Harrison stumbled back a step, his breath catching in his throat.

"You threatened to destroy my life," Nathan said, leaning over the table until he was inches from Harrison’s pale face. "Now listen to me carefully. By noon today, you will resign from the board of this company. You will surrender your stock options to a independent trust for Lily. And if your daughter so much as breathes in the direction of my child again, I won't just release those files to the SEC—I’ll hand them directly to the Department of Justice."
Harrison stared at Nathan, realizing in one agonizing second that the quiet, dutiful son-in-law he had manipulated for years was dead. In his place stood a man who would gladly burn the world to ashes to protect his child.
