Chapter 5 - The War in Court

Three days later, the King County Family Courtroom was packed to capacity. The air was thick with tension as judge Margaret Lawson took her seat behind the high wooden bench.
On the left side of the room sat Vanessa Montgomery, dressed in a conservative beige dress, wearing no makeup, and sitting alongside three of the top family law attorneys in the state. Beside her sat her father, looking gray and haggard.
On the right sat Nathan, flanked by Evelyn Vance. Directly behind them sat Elena, holding small Lily’s hand in the front row of the gallery.
"We are here today to hear the emergency petition for sole legal and physical custody filed by Mr. Nathan Hayes regarding the minor child, Lily Vance," Judge Lawson announced, scanning the heavy stack of documents before her. "Counsel, begin."
Vanessa’s lead attorney, a razor-sharp lawyer named Arthur Pendelton, stood up confidently.
"Your Honor," Pendelton began, smoothing his suit jacket. "My client, Mrs. Vanessa Hayes, has been the victim of a coordinated character assassination. The child in question was brought into the household under mysterious circumstances by a disgruntled employee, Elena Vance. My client suffered a nervous breakdown due to the sudden shock of discovering her husband’s secret past. We contend that Mr. Hayes is emotionally unstable and unfit for temporary custody, and we request that the child be placed in neutral state care pending a psychological evaluation."
Judge Lawson’s expression remained unreadable. "Mr. Vance?"
Evelyn stood up gracefully, holding a small metal flash drive.
"Your Honor," Evelyn said, her voice echoing clearly through the courtroom. "We do not need to speculate on Mrs. Hayes’s emotional state. We have hard, undeniable evidence."
Evelyn walked over to the court clerk and handed over the drive. "This drive contains video surveillance footage recovered from the security system at the Hayes estate—footage that Mrs. Hayes believed she had deleted from the cloud server."
Vanessa’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute terror. She grabbed her lawyer’s arm, whispering frantically, but Pendelton looked equally blindsided.
The courtroom lights were dimmed, and a large monitor on the wall hummed to life.
The video timestamp showed the previous morning at 10:14 AM. The camera captured the grand kitchen. The footage clearly showed Vanessa holding the golf club, her face twisted in rage, screaming at Elena as the maid tried to shield Lily on the floor.
The audio echoed loudly through the quiet courtroom:
"I should have killed you six years ago, Clara!" Vanessa’s recorded voice shrieked from the speakers. "You think this bastard is ever going to see a dime of Nathan’s money?! I’ll bury both of you before I let her ruin my life!"
The room erupted into shocked gasps. Several reporters in the back row began scribbling frantically on their pads.
Judge Lawson slammed her gavel down with a sharp, thunderous crack. "Silence in the court!"
The judge turned her gaze toward Vanessa, her eyes burning with cold, judicial fury. Vanessa shrank back into her leather chair, her face completely drained of color.
"Mrs. Hayes," Judge Lawson said, her voice shivering with disgust. "In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely witnessed such explicit, callous disregard for human life and the safety of a child."
The judge pulled a pen from her robe and signed the document before her with sharp, decisive strokes.
"I am granting sole legal and physical custody of Lily Vance to her biological father, Mr. Nathan Hayes, effective immediately," Judge Lawson declared. "I am issuing a permanent, lifetime protection order prohibiting Vanessa Montgomery from coming within two thousand feet of the child, Mr. Hayes, or Miss Elena Vance. Furthermore, based on the video evidence of felony child abuse and explicit threats of murder, I am revoking Mrs. Hayes’s bail. Bailiffs, take the defendant into custody."
Two uniformed bailiffs moved in instantly, grabbing Vanessa by the arms.
"No! Nathan! Help me!" Vanessa screamed, kicking her legs as she was yanked out of her chair. "Dad! Do something! Nathan!"
Nathan stood tall, watching as his former wife was dragged through the side door of the courtroom in heavy chains. He didn't say a word. He turned around, walked straight to the gallery, and lifted Lily into his arms.

Lily wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder. "Are we going home now, Daddy?"
"Yes, baby," Nathan whispered, kissing her soft forehead. "We’re going home."
