Chapter 5 - The Gala of Snakes

Two months passed.
The bond between Julian, Carmen, and the children grew deeper every day. What had started as an employer-employee relationship had blossomed into something profound, romantic, and undeniable.
Julian had officially moved Carmen and Ana out of the carriage house and into the main mansion’s master wing. While they maintained professional boundaries in front of the lower staff, everyone in the house knew the truth: Julian Everhart was in love with his maid, and his children considered little Ana their big sister.
However, in the elite circles of Greenwich high society, rumors were spreading like wildfire.
Victoria Sterling and her father were furious over being cut out of the lucrative Everhart tech deal. They began feeding poisonous stories to the tabloids: Billionaire Julian Everhart Loses His Mind After Wife’s Death, Seduced by Mexican Housekeeper.
To silence the rumors and establish his new life, Julian decided to host the annual Everhart Foundation Gala at his mansion—a high-society event attended by New York’s richest investors, politicians, and media moguls.
"I want you by my side, Carmen," Julian declared one evening over dinner in the main dining room.
Carmen froze, holding her fork halfway to her mouth. "Julian... no. I am not built for your world. Those people will tear me apart."
"You are stronger than all of them combined," Julian insisted, taking her hand across the table. "I don't care about society, Carmen. I care about us. I want them to see the woman who brought life back into this house."
On the night of the gala, the Everhart mansion was illuminated by thousands of fairy lights. Valets parked sleek Ferraris and Lamborghinis along the private road, and red carpet covered the front marble steps.
Inside, orchestra music played as hundreds of wealthy guests milled about in tuxedos and diamond-encrusted gowns.
At 8:30 PM, Julian descended the grand staircase.
Beside him walked Carmen.
A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom.
Carmen was breathtaking. Julian had personally hired a famous designer from Paris to craft her gown—a stunning emerald-green silk dress that complemented her olive skin and dark hair perfectly. She wore simple, elegant diamond earrings—a gift from Julian. She carried herself not with arrogance, but with a natural, majestic grace that silenced every room she entered.
For an hour, the event was a triumph. Julian proudly introduced Carmen as his partner, casually shutting down any snide remarks from snobbish investors.
Then, Arthur Sterling and Victoria stepped out from the crowd.
Victoria was wearing a crimson dress, her eyes filled with cold hatred as she looked at Carmen’s stunning transformation. Arthur, a powerful man with silver hair and a ruthless reputation, held a microphone used for the evening's speeches.
"Ladies and gentlemen! May I have your attention please?" Arthur’s voice echoed over the ballroom speakers.
The crowd quieted down, turning toward the stage.
"We are all here tonight to celebrate the Everhart Foundation," Arthur said, a wicked smile on his face. "And we are all happy to see Julian recovered from his terrible grief. However... as a trustee of the Everhart estate, I have a duty to protect this family from fraud."
Julian’s eyes narrowed. He stepped forward. "Arthur, step down from the stage."
Arthur ignored him, pointing a finger directly at Carmen.
"Tonight, Julian introduces us to this woman—Carmen Duarte. He claims she is a miracle worker. But my private investigators have spent the last month looking into her past in Mexico!"
Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Guests pulled out their phones.
Carmen felt the blood drain from her face. Her hand trembled in Julian’s grip.
"Show the screen!" Victoria called out triumphantly to the technician.
The large projector screen behind the stage flickered to life. A mugshot from a Mexican police station appeared on the screen, showing a younger Carmen, looking terrified, sitting in a holding cell.
"Ten years ago," Arthur shouted into the microphone, "Carmen Duarte was arrested in Guadalajara for grand larceny! She stole fifty thousand dollars from her previous employer—a wealthy Mexican businessman! She fled to the United States under a false identity to escape justice!"
The ballroom erupted into shocked gasps.
"She is a criminal!" Victoria sneered into the crowd. "A thief who targeted a grieving widower to steal his fortune!"
Carmen felt the room spinning. The cruel whispers of three hundred wealthy elite rained down on her like daggers. She looked at Julian, tears streaming down her face.
"Julian..." she choked out, her voice breaking. "I... I can explain..."

Julian stared at the screen, his face completely unreadable.
Victoria smirked, stepping closer to Julian. "Send her back to jail, Julian. Save your dignity."
