Chapter 6 - The Truth Behind the Lie

For ten agonizing seconds, silence stretched across the grand ballroom.
Carmen tried to pull her hand away from Julian’s grip, prepared to run out of the house and hide from the humiliation. But Julian’s fingers tightened around hers, refusing to let her go.
He didn't look angry at Carmen. He looked at Arthur Sterling with a disgust so deep it made the older man falter.
Julian walked calmly up to the stage, taking the microphone directly out of Arthur’s hand. The crowd went completely dead silent.
"Arthur," Julian said, his voice amplified across the entire mansion. "You spent fifty thousand dollars on private investigators to dig up dirty laundry. It’s a pity you didn't spend another hundred dollars to read the full police report."
Victoria’s smirk faltered. "What are you talking about?"
Julian tapped his smartphone screen, connecting it wirelessly to the mansion's main projector system.
"Five minutes ago, my legal team sent me the certified court documents from the High Court of Jalisco, Mexico," Julian announced, his voice booming with absolute authority.
The mugshot disappeared, replaced by official legal documents bearing gold seals.
"Ten years ago," Julian explained, staring directly into the crowd, "Carmen Duarte was employed as a housekeeper by a wealthy textile executive named Hector Morales. When Carmen discovered that Morales was running a human trafficking ring using young immigrant girls, she stole his private ledger containing the names of his buyers and handed it to the federal police."
The crowd gasped loudly.
"Morales used his corrupt police connections to briefly arrest Carmen on false charges of larceny to get his ledger back," Julian continued, his voice thick with pride and emotion. "But three days later, the Mexican Federal Attorney General stepped in, cleared Carmen of all charges, awarded her a medal of bravery, and sent Morales to prison for twenty-five years!"
The screen shifted to show a news article from 2016, featuring a headline praising Carmen Duarte as a hero who had saved fourteen young girls from a trafficking ring.
The ballroom exploded into murmurs of shock and awe. Several prominent women in the front row began to clap softly.
Victoria looked like she had been slapped across the face. Arthur stood frozen, his mouth open, his face red with absolute embarrassment.
Julian stepped down from the stage, walking over to where Carmen stood. He took her hand, bringing it to his lips and kissing her knuckles in front of everyone.
"Carmen Duarte is not a thief," Julian said into the microphone, his eyes locked onto Carmen’s weeping eyes. "She is the bravest, most noble woman I have ever known. She came into my home when my life was in ashes, and she healed my children when no one else could."
He turned to face Arthur and Victoria Sterling.
"Security," Julian commanded flatly. "Escort Mr. Sterling and his daughter off my property. They are permanently blacklisted from every financial institution affiliated with the Everhart name."
Four massive security guards immediately stepped forward, grabbing Arthur and a screaming Victoria by their arms and marching them out through the front doors past three hundred cheering guests.
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause.
Later that night, long after the last guest had left and the mansion was quiet again, Julian and Carmen sat together on the master bedroom balcony, wrapped in a warm blanket, listening to the soft summer breeze.
"You knew?" Carmen whispered, resting her head on his shoulder. "About Mexico?"
"Winifred ran a full background check the day she hired you," Julian smiled softly, kissing the top of her head. "She knew you were a hero, Carmen. That's why she hired you on the spot."
Carmen let out a tearful laugh, wrapping her arms around his waist. "I was so scared you would hate me."
May you like
"I could never hate you," Julian murmured, lifting her chin to look into her eyes. "I love you, Carmen. I want you to be my wife. I want Ana to legally be my daughter."
Carmen’s heart soared. "Yes," she whispered, her voice filled with pure happiness. "Yes, Julian."
