Chapter 5 - The Siege of Ward 4

Although Colonel Drake was arrested, his criminal syndicate was far larger than Admiral Holloway had anticipated. Drake’s private financial backers—a corrupt cabal of defense contractors—realized that if Nora testified at the upcoming military tribunal, their multi-million-dollar illegal arms network would crumble.
Two days before the trial, a coordinated attack struck the base hospital.
At 3:00 PM, while the facility was packed with civilian visitors and recovering service members, a powerful explosive charge detonated in the basement generator room. The explosion plunged the entire four-story building into darkness, knocking out primary power and triggering automatic fire doors that sealed off Ward 4—the post-operative surgical floor where Nora was on duty.
Dense smoke began pouring through the ventilation shafts. Panic erupted in the hallways as nurses and doctors tried to evacuate critical patients in total darkness.
Down in the main courtyard, Marcus Vance saw the smoke rising from Ward 4. Without waiting for base firefighters, he grabbed a tactical entry kit and Ranger’s heavy leather working harness.
"Ranger! Work!" Vance commanded, snapping the harness onto the Doberman.
Ranger barked once—a deep, booming command response—and sprinted toward the burning building with Vance hot on his heels.
Inside Ward 4, Nora was refusing to evacuate. While other staff fled down the emergency stairwells, Nora remained inside the intensive recovery room, manually pumping a bag-valve mask to keep an elderly veteran alive whose mechanical ventilator had failed during the power outage.
"Nora! You have to leave!" a young junior nurse screamed through the smoke. "The fires are spreading from the elevator shaft!"
"Get the ambulatory patients out!" Nora ordered, her voice calm and commanding amidst the blaring sirens. "I'm not leaving this man behind!"
Suddenly, the heavy door at the end of the hall was kicked open. Two armed mercenaries wearing gas masks stepped through the smoke, scanning the hallway with mounted rifle lights. They had used the chaos of the fire to hunt down Nora before she could reach the tribunal.
"Clear the rooms!" one mercenary shouted. "Find Callahan!"
Nora heard their boots against the tile. She softly set down the oxygen bag, grabbed a stainless-steel surgical tray from a supply cart, and stepped behind the door frame, her heart pounding with cold calculation.
As the first mercenary entered the room, Nora swung the heavy metal tray with explosive force, smashing it across his mask. The man stumbled back, disoriented. Nora grabbed his rifle barrel, twisted it downward, and delivered a brutal palm strike to his throat, dropping him instantly to the floor.
However, the second mercenary raised his weapon, aiming directly at Nora’s chest. "End of the line, Master Chief."
CRASH!
A streak of black fury erupted through the smoke. Ranger leaped over a fallen gurney, locking his jaws onto the mercenary’s arm and tearing him away from Nora. The rifle clattered onto the floor.
Marcus Vance slid into the room a second later, securing the weapon and knocking the mercenary unconscious with a swift butt-stroke to the jaw.
"Need a hand, Nurse Callahan?" Marcus called out, coughing through the rising smoke.

Nora grabbed the manual oxygen bag and looked at Marcus with fierce gratitude. "Help me move this bed! We’re getting this veteran out together!"
Working seamlessly as a team, Marcus, Nora, and Ranger navigated through the blinding smoke and fire, guiding the remaining stranded patients down the emergency stairwell to safety just as the base fire department breached the lower doors.
