Chapter 7 - Reclaiming the Light

Three months after the trial, the shadows that had hung over Nora Callahan’s life for two long years had completely vanished.
The Department of the Navy officially cleared her record, restoring her full honors and back pay. Furthermore, Admiral Holloway established a revolutionary new military program: The Apex Canine Rehabilitation & Trauma Division—a facility dedicated to rescuing, healing, and rehoming traumatized working dogs who had been wounded in the line of duty.
Nora was offered full command of the new facility as Director, with the rank of Senior Chief Master Handler.
On a warm Saturday morning, the sun shone brightly over the newly constructed headquarters overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. Dozens of service members, veteran handlers, and hospital staff gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Nora stood at the podium, looking out at the crowd. Standing right beside the stage was Marcus Vance, wearing a sharp civilian suit, his eyes filled with undeniable affection. Beside him, Ranger sat calmly, his tail gently thumping against the grass.
"For a long time," Nora said into the microphone, her voice warm and steady, "I believed that trauma was a permanent end. I thought that once something was broken—whether it was a soldier, a nurse, or a dog—it could never truly be whole again."
She looked down at Ranger, who raised his head to meet her gaze.
"But Ranger taught me that healing isn't about forgetting the pain," Nora continued, her eyes glistening with soft emotion. "It’s about finding a place where you are safe enough to stop being afraid. Today, we give that safe place back to the brave animals who give us everything."
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause. Nora stepped down from the stage, snip-cutting the ceremonial red ribbon alongside Admiral Holloway and Creger, who had become one of the clinic’s most dedicated supporters.
After the ceremony, as guests gathered around the catering tables, Marcus walked up to Nora, holding two glasses of sparkling lemonade. He handed one to her, his smile gentle and deep.
"You built something incredible here, Director Callahan," Marcus murmured, stepping close enough that their shoulders touched.
"I had good help," Nora replied softly, looking up at him. "Including a certain tactical liaison who refused to let me give up."

Marcus set his glass aside and took Nora’s hand, his fingers intertwining with hers. "I’m not planning on going anywhere, Nora. Not now. Not ever."
Nora’s heart swelled with a deep, peaceful warmth she hadn't felt in years. She leaned up and pressed a soft, sweet kiss to his cheek. "Good. Because Ranger and I have already decided you're keeping us."
