Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

The final collapse of Andrew’s fabricated world happened with ruthless, mechanical efficiency over the next two weeks.
With Colonel Bennett’s legal team orchestrating every move, the divorce proceedings didn't even make it to a contested trial. Presented with irrefutable evidence of financial fraud, domestic endangerment, systemic neglect, and malicious abandonment, Andrew’s high-priced defense attorney advised his client to accept a comprehensive consent decree without reservation.
The terms of the settlement were absolute:
Full Custody: Sole physical and legal custody of Lily was awarded exclusively to me, with zero unsupervised visitation rights granted to Andrew until mandatory psychological evaluations and parenting classes were completed.
Asset Liquidation: All remaining corporate shares, personal investments, and property holdings belonging to Andrew were liquidated under court supervision to satisfy the secondary trust liens and establish an ironclad college and medical trust fund for Lily.
Restraining Orders: Both Andrew and Margaret were permanently restrained from coming within one thousand yards of myself, my daughter, or my father’s property.
As for Vanessa, her brief foray into high-society romance came to an abrupt and humiliating end the moment the asset freeze hit Andrew’s personal accounts. Not only did she leave him before the divorce papers were even formally filed, but she also left behind a scathing text message calling him a fraud for dragging her down with his sinking ship.
Margaret tried to file a counter-petition claiming grandparental rights, but her motion was summarily dismissed by Judge Thorne within ten minutes when the court reviewed the security footage and police reports from Christmas Eve.
Sitting at my father’s dining table on a crisp January afternoon, I signed the final set of settlement papers.
My hand didn't shake. My heart didn't ache. There was only a profound, beautiful sense of lightness—the feeling of a heavy anchor finally being cut away from a ship that was ready to sail into open waters.
Calvin walked over, placing a steaming cup of tea in front of me, just as he had on the morning after the blizzard.
“Done?” he asked gently.
May you like
I picked up the pen, capped it, and looked up at my father with a smile that reached all the way to my eyes.
“Done,” I said.
