Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary in the Guest Wing

Down the hall in the east guest wing, the heavy oak door was locked from the inside.

Audrey sat huddled in the center of the plush, oversized duvet, her knees pulled tightly to her chest. The elaborate lace of her wedding gown was torn at the hem where she had tripped while fleeing down the corridor. Her hair, once styled into an intricate crown of braids and pearls, now hung in wild, damp strands around her pale face.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Audrey flinched, letting out a sharp gasp. "Go away! Julian, please, just go away!"

"Audrey, sweetheart, it’s not Julian. It’s me. Clara."

The voice through the wood was gentle, trembling with a sorrow that felt bottomless.

Audrey hesitated, her breath coming in ragged hitches. Slowly, she slid off the bed, crept across the floor on bare feet, and turned the brass key in the lock. She pulled the door open just a few inches, peering out into the dim hallway.

Clara stood alone. Her wedding-day makeup was smeared, her posture beaten down by the revelation she had just absorbed downstairs. When she saw Audrey—the terrified, shivering girl she had grown to love as a daughter—Clara’s heart shattered all over again.

Without a word, Clara pushed the door open further, stepped inside, and wrapped her arms tightly around Audrey’s trembling shoulders.

Audrey broke down completely, burying her face in Clara’s neck, sobbing with a force that wrung her entire body. "He looked at me, Mom... he didn't look like the man I married. His eyes... they were dead. He backed me against the wall, and he whispered... he whispered that my wedding night was my execution."

"I know, my darling, I know," Clara murmured, rocking her back and forth, pressing kisses into the crown of Audrey’s tangled hair. "I know everything."

Audrey pulled back slightly, her tear-filled eyes wide with terror. "You... you talked to him?"

"Downstairs. Richard and George heard it all." Clara wiped a stray tear from Audrey’s cheek with a thumb that felt numb. "Audrey, why didn't you ever tell us about Sienna? Why didn't you tell Julian about what happened at the clinic?"

Audrey’s breath caught. She shrank back against the bedpost, hugging her arms around herself as if trying to keep her pieces from scattering.

"I didn't... I didn't know it was Sienna," Audrey whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the night.

Clara frowned. "What do you mean you didn't know?"

"At the clinic in Richmond, we process hundreds of confidential files every single day," Audrey explained, her voice cracking as fresh tears spilled over her lashes. "We use alphanumeric patient IDs for initial screenings to protect privacy. I didn't see her face on her medical chart, Clara. I didn't know her name was Sienna Vance."

"Then how—"

"A week after she died," Audrey sobbed, "the hospital launched an internal compliance audit because someone leaked details of that specific screening to an outside firm. The investigator pulled the access logs. My terminal login had been used to view the file. But it wasn't me! I was on lunch break when that log was accessed. Someone stole my password credentials—likely a disgruntled temp worker in our department trying to sell medical gossip to headhunters."

Clara’s breath hitched. "Did you tell the investigators?"

"I tried! I showed them my timecard, I proved I was in the cafeteria," Audrey cried. "The hospital cleared me of any intentional wrongdoing, but the cloud of suspicion... it followed me. I lost my position at the clinic, I had to move across the city, and I lived in terror that someone would blame me for a tragedy I had nothing to do with."

Audrey looked up at Clara, her eyes pleading for a shred of understanding.

"When I met Julian... he was so kind, so warm, so steady. He healed my loneliness. I thought... I thought God had given me a second chance at happiness. I never, ever knew that he was Sienna’s fiancé. He never mentioned her name. He never told me why he really transferred to my branch of the city. He made it all a trap."

Clara stood frozen, the full, sickening architecture of Julian’s vengeance collapsing around her.

It wasn't just a sudden outburst of grief. It was an engineered, multi-year conspiracy. Julian had hunted Audrey down, manufactured a romance, won her heart, gained her family's trust, and led her all the way to the altar—just so he could shatter her soul on the night she felt safest.

"He's not a grieving fiancé, Audrey," Clara said, her voice dropping into a cold, lethal resolve. "He is a predator who used my home and my heart to execute a sadistic game."

Audrey grabbed Clara’s sleeve. "Clara, we have to leave. Now. Tonight. If we stay here, he might... God, I don't know what he'll do."

Before Clara could answer, a heavy thud echoed against the hallway wall outside.

May you like

It wasn't a knock.

It was the sound of a fist slamming into the drywall, followed by the slow, heavy turn of the brass doorknob.
