Chapter 4 - The Fracture of the Family

The doorknob rattled.

Audrey screamed, scrambling backward until her spine hit the headboard of the bed. Clara whipped around, stepping instinctively between the doorway and the terrified girl.

The door swung open.

Julian stood in the threshold. He had not come alone. Richard and George stood right behind him, their faces grim, carved out of stone. Richard’s jaw was set so tight a muscle pulsed in his cheek, and George looked as though he was restraining himself from physical violence.

"Step aside, Mom," Julian said. His voice was no longer frantic; it was chillingly, terrifyingly level.

"Don't you dare come another step closer, Julian," Clara warned, her voice rising with maternal fury. "You have terrorized this girl enough for one lifetime. It ends tonight."

"It doesn't end until I say it ends," Julian replied, taking a slow step into the room. His eyes locked onto Audrey, who was hyperventilating, her hands clawing at the duvet. "Audrey. Did you really think you could hide behind my mother? Did you think a locked door would keep the truth out?"

"Julian, enough!" Richard’s voice boomed through the room like a thunderclap.

The big man stepped past Clara, placing his heavy hand directly onto his son’s chest, halting him in his tracks. Richard towered over Julian, his eyes blazing with a fury that outmatched his son's cold detachment.

"Dad, stay out of this," Julian muttered, trying to shrug his father’s hand off. "This is between me and her. You don't know what she did—"

"I know exactly what she did, and I know precisely what you did," Richard interrupted, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl. "For two years, you brought this girl into our home. You sat at our dining table, you smiled while your mother baked her bread, you asked us to welcome her as a daughter—all while you were using her as a human sacrifice for a sick, twisted vendetta."

Julian’s face tightened. "She killed Sienna!"

"The hospital audit proved she didn't leak that file!" Richard roared, the sound rattling the windowpanes. "Even if she had made a mistake, even if she had been negligent—which she wasn't—that does not give you the right to torture an innocent human being over the course of twenty-four months! That doesn't give you the right to lie to your mother, to me, to everyone who loves you!"

George stepped forward, his expression disgusted. "You played us, Julian. You used our family name, our warmth, our home, to set a trap for a wedding that was never a marriage. You made fools of us."

Julian looked around the room, meeting the eyes of the three people who had raised him, protected him, and loved him without reservation. Instead of shame, his expression hardened into an ugly, defensive sneer.

"You don't understand," Julian spat. "Sienna didn't matter to you. She was just a girl who came and went. But she was my world. And when you lose your world, you burn down everything else to keep warm."

"You haven't kept warm, Julian," Clara said, her voice breaking as tears finally spilled over her cheeks. "You've frozen to death inside. The son I raised died three years ago with Sienna. The man standing here... I don't know who you are."

Julian stared at his mother. For a split second, something flickered behind his eyes—a brief, agonizing flash of the boy he used to be before grief warped him into a monster. But it vanished almost as quickly as it appeared, replaced by a wall of bitter, impenetrable ice.

"Then I guess it's a good thing I don't need you anymore," Julian whispered.

He turned on his heel, walked out of the guest room, and slammed the door behind him so hard the plaster cracked along the frame.
