Chapter 8 - The Legal Reckoning

While we explored the hidden corners of the estate, the outside world was catching up with Robert, Patricia, and Melissa.
Federal prosecutors moved swiftly on the financial fraud investigation involving the children’s charity embezzled by Melissa. Because Robert’s signature was attached to the corporate shell companies used to funnel the funds, federal agents served formal indictments against both of them by Wednesday afternoon.
The trial wasn't expected to last long. The digital paper trail Marco had compiled was airtight, complete with recorded phone calls where Melissa and Patricia discussed how to systematically squeeze Jack and me out of the family assets.
We didn't attend the initial arraignment. We had more important things to focus on—like planting tomato seeds in the backyard garden with Tyler and Emma, and turning the sterile, intimidating formal dining room into a warm, paint-splattered arts and crafts studio for the kids.
For the first time since we moved into the neighborhood, neighbors stopped by not to inspect our clothes or judge our social standing, but to welcome us properly. The local baker dropped off a box of fresh pastries—free of charge—just to congratulate Jack on reclaiming his family legacy.
“You know,” Jack said as we sat on the back patio watching the kids chase fireflies under the warm evening sky, “I used to think power meant owning skyscrapers, holding high-society galas, and demanding respect from people who were afraid of you.”
He turned, looking at me with a soft, affectionate smile.

“And now?” I asked, resting my head against his shoulder.
“Now I know real power is sitting right here on this porch with you and the kids, knowing nobody can ever take our peace away again.”
