Chapter 5 - The Spider’s Web

While Owen rested, the investigation expanded.

Detectives executed a search warrant on the dilapidated rental house where Diane had been hiding out on the outskirts of Portland. What they found painted an even darker picture of the past five years.

Mark briefed me in the corridor outside Owen’s room late that evening, holding a tablet displaying crime scene photographs.

“She didn't act entirely alone for all five years, Claire,” Mark said, swiping through images of a barren, windowless room with deadbolts installed on the outside of the door. “About three years ago, she lived with a man named Arthur Vance—a former local contractor with a record for domestic coercion. He helped her set up the false identities and the cash flow system.”

“Is Vance in custody?” I asked, my eyes scanning the photos of the locked room where my son had likely spent his early childhood years.

“We picked him up two hours ago at a motel near the gorge,” Mark confirmed. “He tried to run, but state troopers cornered him. He’s already talking to deflect blame onto Diane. Says she was the mastermind behind the child abduction scheme from day one.”

“She was,” I said bitterly. “She planned it while we were living under the same roof. She watched me cry on television. She held my hand at candlelight vigils while knowing exactly where my son was.”

“Human cruelty doesn't make logical sense, Claire,” Mark said softly. “It just destroys. But we’ve dismantled her entire support network. Every alias she used, every fake school registration, every bank account—it’s all being seized by the federal prosecutor's office.”

“Good,” I said. “Make sure every single piece of evidence is cataloged. I want an airtight case that leaves no room for appeals or technicalities.”
