Chapter 7 - The Arraignment and the Fallout

One week after Owen’s rescue, the Multnomah County Courthouse was packed with reporters, child advocacy workers, and curious onlookers.

Diane Vance and Arthur Vance sat side by side at the defense table. Diane looked unrecognizable—her hair limp, her posture slumped, wearing the orange jumpsuit of a federal inmate.

Judge Thomas Sterling presided over the courtroom with an expression of cold, unyielding authority.

“We are here for the formal arraignment in the matter of State of Oregon versus Diane Marie Jenkins and Arthur James Vance,” Judge Sterling announced, striking his gavel once. “The charges include kidnapping in the first degree, custodial interference, aggravated child abuse, and conspiracy to commit fraud.”

Diane’s public defender stood up immediately. “Your Honor, my client pleads not guilty to all charges. We intend to prove that this was a complex domestic custody dispute rather than a criminal abduction.”

From the front row of the gallery, I stood up, buttoning my suit jacket.

“Excuse me, Your Honor,” I said, stepping forward.

Judge Sterling looked down from the bench, recognizing me instantly. “Director Claire Jenkins. You have standing as both a victim’s advocate and the primary legal guardian of the minor child. Do you wish to address the court?”

“I do,” I said clearly, my voice carrying across the silent courtroom. “There is no custody dispute here, Your Honor. Diane Jenkins was never granted custody. She was an aunt who stole a two-year-old child from a public park, subjected him to five years of physical neglect, psychological terror, and financial exploitation, and used forged state documents to evade law enforcement.”

I pulled the DNA lab report and the original amber alert file from my portfolio and placed them on the clerk’s desk.

“The state has absolute proof, including uncoerced video confessions from the co-defendant, Arthur Vance, detailing the premeditated nature of the kidnapping. We are asking for an immediate trial date with zero possibility of bond.”

Diane glared at me from across the courtroom, her face twisting into a mask of pure hatred. She stood up abruptly, pointing a trembling finger at me.

“You ruined my life, Claire! You always had everything! You took—!”

“Silence!” Judge Sterling banged his gavel twice, the sharp sound echoing like a gunshot through the room. “Another outburst from the defendant, and you will be removed from the courtroom for the remainder of these proceedings.”

The judge looked down at the documents, then back at Diane and her attorney.

“Bail is denied for both defendants,” Judge Sterling ruled firmly. “The trial is scheduled for August 12th. May God have mercy on your souls, because this court certainly will not.”
