Chapter 5 - The Legal Warzone

Over the next three weeks, the quiet suburban life Trevor Hayes had constructed crumbled into absolute ruin.

It wasn't just a domestic violence case anymore; it was an all-out corporate and legal obliteration. Arthur Pendelton and Harrison’s legal battalion moved with ruthless, terrifying efficiency. Trevor’s employer, Apex Financial, fired him on the spot upon receiving the preliminary audit of his financial crimes. His bank accounts were frozen under emergency civil asset forfeiture orders requested by the Sterling legal team.

Trevor tried to retain a high-priced criminal defense attorney, but every top firm in the state mysteriously turned him down, warned off by quiet phone calls from Harrison’s associates. He was forced to rely on a public defender who looked at his mountain of legal charges and sighed with exhaustion.

Meanwhile, Rebecca was safely recovering at Harrison’s sprawling estate on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. The pale blue living room of her old house felt like a lifetime ago. Surrounded by her daughter Emma, top-tier medical care, and the unwavering support of her father, Rebecca began to heal. Her broken tooth was temporarily capped with a flawless porcelain veneer, restoring her radiant smile, though the emotional scars ran deep.

One afternoon, sitting in the sunroom overlooking the crashing waves, Rebecca received a visit from Detective Miller of the local precinct.

“Mrs. Hayes—or rather, Ms. Sterling, as your legal team has filed for a expedited restoration of your maiden name,” the detective said gently, holding a clipboard. “We have enough evidence for an immediate indictment on felony domestic assault, aggravated battery of a pregnant person, and child endangerment. Mr. Hayes is currently being held at the county detention center without bail, thanks to the federal financial charges.”

Rebecca looked down at her swollen belly, where her son was kicking gently.

“Will he walk free on bail?” she asked, her voice steady.

“Not a chance,” Detective Miller replied with a slight smile. “With your father’s legal team submitting sworn affidavits from your medical records, and the financial crimes holding him under federal jurisdiction, Trevor Hayes isn't seeing daylight anytime soon. But we need your formal statement and testimony to ensure maximum sentencing.”

“I’ll give it,” Rebecca said without a single tremor in her voice. “I’ll give it in open court.”
