Chapter 6 - Unearthing the Past

As the trial date approached, the media caught wind of the story. Headlines exploded across national news outlets: Billionaire Heir’s Secret Nightmare: Corporate Fraudster Husband Arrested After Brutal Assault on Pregnant Wife.
Paparazzi camped outside the courthouse. Talk shows dissected the case, turning it into a nationwide discussion on domestic abuse, financial coercion, and the hidden horrors behind closed doors in affluent neighborhoods.
During discovery, Trevor’s defense tried a desperate, pathetic tactic: they painted Rebecca as unstable, unstable and prone to hallucinations, claiming she had fabricated the abuse out of postpartum depression.
That was when Harrison Sterling unleashed his masterstroke.
In a closed-door deposition, Pendelton presented not just the medical reports and photographs of Rebecca’s broken tooth, but a digital archive recovered from an old cloud account belonging to Trevor’s late mother. It revealed a horrifying lineage—Trevor had been raised in an abusive household where his own father had beaten his mother with impunity, and Trevor had inherited those exact sadistic tendencies, secretly boasting about his control over Rebecca in private text messages to an old college fraternity group chat.
When Trevor was confronted with the messages during a pre-trial hearing, his arrogant facade completely shattered. The man who had once stood over his pregnant wife with a raised fist now sat in an orange jumpsuit, shaking uncontrollably, weeping tears of self-pity as the judge looked down at him with utter disgust.
“You are a coward, Mr. Hayes,” the judge stated coldly during a motions hearing. “You used your size, your financial leverage, and psychological manipulation to terrorize a woman who was carrying your child and holding your toddler. You have shown zero remorse.”
Trevor looked across the courtroom, locking eyes with Rebecca. She wasn't cowering anymore. She wasn't whispering apologies or trying to keep the peace. She sat tall, elegant, and unbreakable in a sharp white blazer, flanked by her father and her legal team.

Trevor mouthed the words, “Please... Becca... drop the charges. Think of our family.”
Rebecca didn't blink. She turned her head away, completely erasing him from her field of vision.
