Chapter 8 - Blood and Lullabies

The gunfire outside the mansion gradually faded into sporadic, isolated pops before falling silent entirely.
Upstairs in the master suite, the room was suspended in a sacred, breathless quiet.
Dr. Thomas wrapped the tiny infant in a warm, sterile blanket and handed her directly to Maya.
Maya looked down at the tiny, perfect face, her chest heaving, tears streaming freely down her cheeks. The baby had a shock of dark hair, tiny pink fingers curled into fists, and let out a soft, indignant squeak as she felt the cool air of the room.
“Look at her,” Maya whispered, her voice breaking with overwhelming love. “Adrian... look at our daughter.”
Adrian dropped to his knees beside the bed. For the first time in his life, the ruthless crime boss of Chicago looked completely undone. His hands trembled as he reached out, hovering just inches from the baby’s face before gently, reverently resting his index finger against her tiny palm.
The baby instantly wrapped her microscopic fingers around his finger, holding on with surprising strength.
Adrian stopped breathing. A single tear broke free from his dark lashes, tracking down his cheek and dripping onto the back of his hand.
“She has your eyes,” Adrian whispered, his voice thick with unspooled emotion. He leaned forward, pressing his forehead gently against Maya’s, his breath mingling with hers. “Thank you, Maya. Thank you for saving her. Thank you for saving me.”
Maya lifted her free hand, resting her palm against his rough cheek, feeling the stubble and the warmth of his skin. The anger, the bitterness, and the months of cold loneliness melted away in the golden firelight of the hearth.
“You’re bleeding,” she whispered, noticing a graze across his knuckle from the chaos downstairs.
“It’s nothing,” he murmured, kissing her lips softly, tenderly, with a reverence that felt like a prayer. “You’re safe. Both of you. No one will ever touch you again. I swear it on my life.”
The door opened softly, and Grant Mercer stepped into the room, his overcoat dusted with snow, a streak of soot across his cheek. He stopped short, taking in the scene—the exhausted mother, the healthy newborn, and the kneeling mafia boss who looked like a man who had just conquered the entire world and found it wasn't enough.
“Perimeter is secure, boss,” Grant said quietly, lowering his gaze with deep respect. “Moretti’s men won’t be bothering anyone ever again. The convoy has been cleared.”
Adrian didn't look up from Maya and the child in her arms.

“Good,” Adrian said, his voice cold as ice. “Send a message to the remaining families in the city. Tell them that Maya Cole is my wife, and my daughter is the sole heir to everything I own. Anyone who looks in their direction dies.”
“Consider it done,” Grant said, turning and quietly closing the door behind him.
