Chapter 2 - The Gilded Cage

The leather interior of the black Maybach smelled of costly cedar, faint rain, and the unmistakable metallic tang of dry adrenaline.

Maya sat in the backseat, wrapped in a heavy charcoal cashmere coat that Vincent had draped over her shoulders before carrying her out the private side exit of the hotel. Her feet, cleaned and loosely bandaged by a hotel physician, throbbed with a dull, rhythmic ache.

Beside her, Vincent Torino stared out the tinted window. His profile was carved from granite—sharp jawline, a shadow of dark stubble, and eyes that held the terrifying calm of deep ocean water before a hurricane.

"Where are we going?" Maya’s voice was a dry rascal sound, barely louder than the hum of the engine.

Vincent didn't look at her immediately. He reached for a crystal decanter built into the armrest, poured two fingers of amber bourbon into a heavy glass, and handed it to her.

"Drink," he commanded softly.

"I don't—"

"It will stop your hands from shaking."

She looked down at her fingers. He was right; she was trembling so hard her nails clicked against the leather. She took the glass, her cold fingers briefly brushing his warm, solid ones. An electric shock rippled up her arm. She swallowed a sip. The liquid burned down her throat, settling like a small fire in her chest.

"You're going to my home," Vincent said, leaning back against the leather. "The Obsidian Ridge. It's twenty miles outside the city, heavily fortified, and entirely beyond Marcus Hail's reach."

Maya gripped the glass tighter. "And what happens to me there? You told that room I was yours. The woman in emeralds... she said I can't leave."

Vincent finally turned his gaze to her. His dark eyes locked onto hers with a weight that made it hard to breathe.

"In my world, Maya, a claim is not a romantic gesture. It is a blood oath," he explained calmly. "By stepping between you and Hail, I broke a twenty-million-dollar marriage contract with the Moretti family. Bianca Moretti was supposed to be my bride tonight to unite the two largest syndicates in the state. Instead, I humiliated her father, publicly rejected her, and declared you under my absolute protection."

Panic spiked in her chest. "Why would you do that?! You don't even know me! I’m nobody! I’m just a girl who climbed out of a bathroom window to escape a monster!"

"You answered your own question," Vincent murmured, leaning slightly closer. The scent of his expensive cologne—sandalwood and smoked bourbon—wrapped around her senses. "You ran barefoot through a storm, bled on marble, and stood in front of a room of murderers without bowing your head. I do not let weak men destroy strong things."

"I am not a strong thing," she whispered, her voice cracking. "I'm terrified."

"Fear is smart," Vincent said. "Panic is deadly. You are safe from Marcus Hail tonight, Maya. But tomorrow, the entire underworld will demand to know who you are. Until I settle the storm I just created, you stay at my side. Understood?"

Maya stared at him, caught between the terrifying realization that she had escaped one prison only to enter a gilded vault, and the bizarre, undeniable truth that for the first time in three years, she felt safe.

"Understood," she whispered.

Ten minutes later, the Maybach swept through massive wrought-iron gates into the winding, tree-lined driveway of the Torino Estate. The house rose out of the gloom like a fortress—a sprawling stone mansion overlooking the cliffs of the Pacific.

An elderly butler named Harrison opened the car door, holding a massive black umbrella.

Vincent stepped out first, then turned and unhesitatingly gathered Maya into his arms. She gasped, her hands clutching at the lapels of his suit jacket out of instinct. His arms were iron, holding her against his chest effortlessly as he carried her up the wide marble steps, past four heavily armed guards dressed in tailored suits.

He carried her down a long hallway lined with classical oil paintings and high ceilings, stopping at a suite of grand mahogany doors. He pushed them open and set her down gently on a massive king-sized bed covered in dark silk sheets.

"This is your suite," Vincent said, stepping back and straightening his cuffs. "There is a private bath, warm clothes in the closet, and a phone that connects directly to my desk. Do not try to leave the grounds. My men do not shoot guests, but they will not hesitate to escort you back inside."

Maya pulled the cashmere coat tighter around herself. "Vincent?"

He paused at the door, his hand resting on the brass handle. "Yes?"

"What happens to Marcus?"

May you like

Vincent’s dark eyes flickered with something cold and lethal. "Marcus Hail came into my territory, made a scene at my altar, and put his hands on something under my roof. Pray he is smart enough to leave the state tonight, Maya. Because if my men find him before he reaches the border, he will not get another chance to apologize."

The heavy mahogany door clicked shut behind him, leaving Maya alone in the silence of the gilded cage.
