Chapter 6 - The Betrayal at the Gala

The doors to the Grand Council Ballroom opened, revealing a magnificent double-tiered room bathed in warm gold light, crystal chandeliers, and three hundred of the most powerful criminals, politicians, and financiers in North America.
At the center of the room sat a massive round mahogany table where the bosses of the Five Families were seated.
When Vincent walked in, holding Maya’s hand securely in his, the entire room fell into an icy, stunned silence.
Maya wore the blue silk dress, her diamond ring—the Torino crest—glowing brilliantly on her left hand. Her posture was regal, her eyes steady, her chin lifted high. She no longer looked like the barefoot girl who had collapsed in the rain; she looked like a mafia queen.
Don Moretti—a heavy-set, silver-haired man with cold, ruthless eyes—sat at the head of the table, flanked by four armed lieutenants. Beside him stood his daughter, Bianca, looking smug and triumphant.
"Vincent Torino," Don Moretti boomed, his voice echoing off the gold leaf ceilings. "You dare walk into the Council after dishonoring my bloodline and destroying our alliance?"
Vincent didn't flinch. He led Maya to the empty seat reserved for the head of the Torino family, pulling out a chair for her before taking his own seat beside her.
"I didn't destroy the alliance, Moretti," Vincent said smoothly, laying the signed Immunity Contract on the table. "I replaced a weak business arrangement with a sovereign claim. Maya Chin is now Maya Torino. She holds full veto power over my logistics division, and under Section 4 of the Syndicate Charter, any aggression against her is considered an act of war against all Five Families."
Don Moretti’s face turned an ugly, dark shade of purple. He looked down at the official document bearing the ancient seal of the Council.
"She’s a nobody!" Bianca shouted from behind her father. "She’s a runaway rat! She doesn't have a bloodline!"
"She has my blood," Vincent snapped, his voice dropping into a dangerous rumble that made the surrounding guards shift uncomfortably. "And that is the only blood that matters in this city."
Before Don Moretti could respond, a sudden commotion erupted near the terrace balconies overlooking the rain-soaked gardens.
Glass shattered!
A flash-bang grenade detonated in the center of the ballroom with a blinding white light and a deafening sound.
BANG!
Screams erupted across the hall as smoke immediately billowed into the room. Guests scrambled for cover, security guards drew their weapons, and total chaos erupted.
Through the dense smoke, three figures in dark tactical gear rushed toward the Council table.
Before Vincent could draw his weapon, a heavy stun-taser dart struck him in the shoulder, delivering a high-voltage surge that sent his body into temporary muscular paralysis. He fell against the table, growling in fury as he fought against the electrical shock.
Maya gasped, reaching for him, but a heavy, leather-gloved hand wrapped around her mouth from behind, dragging her backward into the blinding smoke toward the open terrace doors.

"Got you, baby," a familiar, terrifying voice whispered in her ear.
It was Marcus Hail.
