Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

Three days later, Della was officially discharged from St. Jude’s Hospital.

She stepped out of the private rear exit into a crisp afternoon breeze, wrapped in a soft cashmere coat that Royce had bought for her. A sleek, bulletproof black SUV was waiting at the curb, surrounded by three dark sedans.

Royce personally opened the door for her, helping her slide into the plush leather interior before getting in beside her.

"Where are we going?" Della asked softly, looking out the tinted window as the convoy pulled away from the hospital.

"To my home," Royce answered. "The Calloway Manor. It is located in the northern hills, high above the city."

The drive took thirty minutes, winding through steep, pine-bordered roads until they reached a set of massive black iron gates monitored by armed guards. As the gates slowly swung open, a stunning stone mansion came into view, surrounded by manicured gardens, sprawling terraces, and a breathtaking view of the city coastline below.

Della gasped, leaning closer to the window. "Royce... this looks like a palace."

"It is a fortress," Royce said gently. "Built with triple-reinforced glass, perimeter motion sensors, and twenty-four-hour personal security. You and the baby will be completely safe here."

The vehicle stopped at the grand entrance. Royce hurried around to open Della’s door, extending his arm for her to lean on. He guided her up the stone steps into the grand foyer, where a row of staff members stood waiting in clean, professional uniforms.

At the head of the line was a middle-aged woman with a warm, maternal smile, wearing a dark blue dress.

"Welcome home, Miss Marsh," the woman said with a crisp, polite curtsy. "I am Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper. Mr. Calloway has instructed us to ensure your every comfort."

Della felt overwhelmed, her face flushing with self-consciousness. "Oh... hello, Mrs. Gable. Please, you don't have to call me Miss Marsh. Della is fine."

"Nonsense, my dear," Mrs. Gable smiled gently. "We have been preparing your suite for three days. It is right upstairs next to Mr. Calloway’s private wing."

Royce led Della up the grand marble staircase to a sprawling master suite on the second floor. The room was flooded with warm sunlight from massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ocean. A massive king-sized bed sat in the center, wrapped in Egyptian cotton sheets, and through an adjoining doorway, Della could see a fully decorated, state-of-the-art nursery.

Della stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes wide with shock.

The nursery was painted in warm, calming cream tones. In the center stood a handcrafted wooden crib, surrounded by plush stuffed animals, designer baby clothes neatly organized on racks, and shelves stocked with every infant accessory imaginable.

"Royce..." Della’s voice cracked, her hand flying to her mouth. "What... what is this?"

Royce walked up behind her, standing close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "I didn't know if you were having a boy or a girl, so I had my designers choose neutral tones. Anything else you need, you only have to say the word."

Tears streamed down Della’s face as she walked into the nursery, running her hand over the smooth wooden edge of the crib. She had spent the last five months staring at her tiny bank account, dreading the day she would have to buy a second-hand stroller or afford basic diapers. Now, standing in this room, she felt a wave of relief so intense it felt almost dizzying.

"Why are you doing all of this for me?" she wept softly, turning around to face him. "I saved your life once, Royce. Just once! You’ve already given me a hundred times more than I ever gave you."

Royce stepped into the nursery, his tall frame looming over the small baby clothes. He looked down at her with a raw, intense emotion that he no longer bothered to hide.

"You gave me my life, Della," he said, his deep voice carrying a quiet power. "Without you, I would have died in a filthy alley before I ever made a single dime. Everything I built—this house, this empire, this wealth—it only exists because you kept me breathing. Everything I have belongs to you."

Della stared at him, her heart thumping frantically against her ribs—not out of fear, but out of a sudden, overwhelming realization. Royce didn't just feel indebted to her. He cared for her. Deeply.

"I don't know how to exist in a world like this, Royce," she whispered softly. "I'm used to fighting for every breath. I'm used to being alone."

"You will never be alone again," Royce vowed, stepping closer and placing his hand gently over hers on the crib railing. "I will spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to fight for anything again."

For a long moment, they stood together in the quiet sunlight of the nursery, the silence between them filled with an unspoken, powerful tension.

However, outside the gates of Calloway Manor, the shadows were deepening.

In a dark, private lounge in the city's underbelly, Harlan Vance sat across from a broad-shouldered man with a scar running through his left eyebrow. The man was Viktor Moretti, the head of a rival crime syndicate that had been pushing to gain control of the city’s northern docks—docks currently controlled by Royce Calloway.

"Calloway completely destroyed my family business in seventy-two hours," Harlan spat, his eyes bloodshot, his hands trembling as he gulped down a glass of scotch. "My fiancée is facing ten years in prison. My father’s political allies have abandoned us. I have nothing left to lose, Viktor."

Viktor smiled thinly, swirling his drink. "Royce Calloway is an arrogant dog. He thinks he owns this city. But I heard a very interesting rumor today from my contacts at St. Jude’s Hospital."

Harlan leaned forward. "What rumor?"

"Calloway moved a woman into his private manor," Viktor said softly. "A pregnant waitress from the Ashworth Grand. He moved his entire private security detail to guard her. He personally visited her every day. He even had her ex-fiancé shipped out of the country."

Harlan’s eyes narrowed. "The waitress... Della Marsh?"

"Calloway has never shown interest in a woman before," Viktor sneered, a wicked grin spreading across his face. "He has no weaknesses. No family, no wives, no children. But now... he has brought a weak, pregnant woman into his home."

May you like

Harlan’s face twisted into a cruel grin. "If we take her... we can force Calloway to give up the northern docks. We can destroy him."

"Not just the docks, my friend," Viktor said, leaning back in his leather chair. "We can make Royce Calloway crawl on his knees before we put a bullet in his head."
