Chapter 8 - Ever After

One year later.
The Ashworth Grand Hotel was bathed in golden light.
The grand lobby, once the site of violence and shattered glass, had been completely restored and redesigned. In place of the old Venetian mirror now stood a stunning, floor-to-ceiling stained-glass mural depicting a rainy night giving way to a brilliant, golden sunrise.
Tonight, the hotel was hosting the annual Calloway Philanthropic Gala—the most prestigious event in the city’s social calendar. Hundreds of influential figures, business leaders, and diplomats filled the ballroom, enjoying fine wine and classical music.
Standing at the top of the grand marble staircase, looking down at the magnificent crowd, was Della Calloway.
She wore an exquisite navy blue silk gown that draped elegantly over her slender frame, her dark hair styled in soft waves adorned with small diamond pins. On her left ring finger, the massive diamond ring sparkled brightly under the chandeliers.
Beside her stood Royce, looking impeccably handsome in a tailored black tuxedo. His arm was wrapped securely around her waist, holding her close to his side.
In Della’s arms was little Hope—now a chubby, happy one-year-old toddler with large, bright dark eyes and soft curls, wearing a tiny white dress.
"Mrs. Calloway," Mrs. Petrova, the senior hotel manager, approached with a respectful, warm smile, holding a clipboard. "The foundation board has just confirmed that tonight’s gala has raised over ten million dollars for the Marsh Shelter for Pregnant Women in Need."
Della smiled warmly. "That is wonderful news, Mrs. Petrova. Thank you for coordinating everything so flawlessly."
"It is an honor, ma'am," Mrs. Petrova bowed slightly before quietly stepping back to oversee the service staff.
Royce leaned down, his lips brushing against Della’s ear, making her smile. "You are magnificent, my queen."
"I learned from the best," Della teased softly, turning her head to look at him. "Though I still prefer our quiet evenings at home."
"So do I," Royce agreed readily, taking tiny Hope from Della’s arms and effortlessly lifting the laughing child onto his broad shoulder. Hope squealed with delight, grabbing onto Royce’s bow tie.
"Look at the fierce mafia boss," Della laughed gently, adjusting Hope’s small dress. "Reduced to a climbing frame by a one-year-old."
"I am happily defeated," Royce smiled, his dark eyes filled with warmth as he held his daughter safely against his chest.
Marcus walked up the stairs, carrying a leather folder, looking immaculate as always. "Boss, Mrs. Calloway. The evening news just reported the final appeal ruling for the Vance family estate. The liquidation is complete. The remaining funds have been transferred directly into Hope’s trust fund."
Royce nodded once, utterly unconcerned with the ghosts of his past. "Good. Dismiss the legal team for the evening, Marcus. Join the party."
"Yes, sir," Marcus smiled, bowing slightly before heading down to the ballroom.
Della walked with Royce out onto the grand private balcony overlooking the city skyline. The night air was cool and crisp, the city lights below sparkling like a galaxy of fallen stars.
Della leaned against the stone balustrade, resting her head gently on Royce’s shoulder as he stood beside her, holding their daughter.
She reached out, her right hand resting over his left hand on the railing. The moonlit night illuminated the back of her hand—and the pale, crescent-shaped scar near her knuckles.
Royce looked down at their joined hands, tracing the mark gently with his thumb.
"Nine years ago, I thought my life was over in a dark alley," Royce murmured softly, looking out over the city he ruled. "I thought the world was only made of violence, blood, and cold greed."
Della looked up at him, her heart overflowing with a love so deep and powerful it made every past tear she had ever cried feel worth it.
"And now?" she asked softly.

Royce turned his gaze to her, his dark gray eyes filled with endless devotion, peace, and eternal love. He kissed her forehead, then leaned down to press his lips gently against hers.
"And now," Royce whispered, holding his wife and daughter close to his heart under the starlight, "I know that the world is made of light... because I found you."
