Chapter 5 - The Glass House

The morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting long, sharp rays of light through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the grand dining room.

The breakfast table was laid out with immaculate precision—silver coffee pots, fresh pastries, crystal glasses of orange juice, and a centerpiece of dark red roses.

Helena sat at the foot of the table, dressed in a sharp tailored burgundy suit. Her makeup was thick, covering the dark circles under her eyes, but her hands were unsteady as she lifted her coffee cup.

She wasn't alone. Sitting to her right was Marcus Sterling—Arthur’s distant cousin, a ruthless corporate raider who had been maneuvering to take over the Sterling board of directors for five years.

"You're panicking, Helena," Marcus whispered, leaning in close, his tone sharp and mocking. "So the maid looks like the dead girl. So what? Arthur is a weak, grieving fool. A simple DNA test takes weeks to process. By then, the board vote will be over, and I'll have control of the shipping lines."

"You don't understand, Marcus!" Helena hissed, her eyes darting toward the foyer. "She knows about the ring! She knows about the wine cellar! If she brings this to the board—"

"She won't bring anything anywhere," Marcus interrupted, taking a slow sip of his espresso. "Because by noon today, your dear husband will suffer a sudden, tragic relapse of his heart condition. And the 'maid' will be arrested for breaking and entering."

Helena looked at Marcus, a dark, desperate spark igniting in her eyes. "Is it ready?"

Marcus patted his jacket pocket. "Dr. Vance prepared the compound. Indetectable. Looks like a standard cardiac arrest."

The double doors of the dining room swung open.

Arthur walked in, accompanied by Julian Vance and Evelyn.

Evelyn was no longer wearing the faded cotton maid’s dress. She wore a tailored black wool dress, her hair pulled up into an elegant knot, the silver lion ring glittering brightly on her left hand. She carried herself with the effortless, royal posture of a woman born to rule the estate.

Marcus slowly set his espresso cup down, his eyes narrowing as he evaluated the woman walking into the room.

"Arthur," Marcus said smoothly, standing up and opening his arms in a fake gesture of warmth. "And... the miraculous long-lost sister. What a theatrical morning."

"Sit down, Marcus," Arthur said. He didn't offer his hand. He sat down at the head of the table, placing Julian’s sealed yellow envelope right next to his plate.

Helena’s eyes locked onto that yellow envelope. "What is that?"

Julian Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of white cotton gloves from his pocket and slipping them on.

"This, Mrs. Sterling," Julian said, his voice echoing loudly in the sunlit room, "is the original, certified copy of the Sterling Family Trust, along with the results of an independent DNA analysis conducted three days ago using hair follicles recovered from Miss Evelyn’s quarters."

Helena’s breath caught. "Three days ago? You... you were in this house?"

"Miss Evelyn has been working in this estate for six months, Helena," Julian said with a cold smile. "Not to clean your floors, but to secure absolute proof of your systematic fraud."

Julian snapped the red wax seal open, pulling out a thick stack of legal documents and holding them up for Marcus and Helena to see.

"The test confirms a 99.9% genetic match," Julian declared. "Evelyn Sterling is alive, legally recognized, and as of 12:01 AM this morning, the sole owner of fifty-one percent of Sterling Enterprises."
