Chapter 9 - The Ghost's Inheritance

The underground tunnel smelled of damp earth, old pine, and century-old brick.

Arthur used the flashlight on his phone to illuminate the narrow, winding passage that ran three hundred yards beneath the estate’s lawns, leading to an abandoned boat house on the edge of the dark river.

Julian Vance sat propped against the damp brick wall of the boat house, his suit coat tightly wrapped around his wounded shoulder. He was pale, but his breath was steady.

"The bullet went straight through," Julian grunted, wincing as Arthur tied a handkerchief around the wound. "I'll survive... to draft the new corporate charter."

Marcus sat in the corner of the wooden dock, shivering uncontrollably, clutching his knees, completely broken by the horror he had just witnessed.

Out on the river, the sharp sirens of police cars and emergency vehicles echoed through the morning mist, accompanied by the thrumming blades of a police helicopter hovering over the mansion.

Evelyn stood at the edge of the dock, watching the thick black smoke rising into the sky from the roof of the Sterling estate.

The mansion was burning again. Just as it had ten years ago.

Arthur walked over, standing beside his sister, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. "It's all gone, Evelyn. The house... the heirlooms... everything Father built."

Evelyn turned her head, looking at her brother with a calm, unyielding expression. She reached down, taking his shaking hand, and placed the silver lion ring into his palm.

"The house was just wood and stone, Arthur," Evelyn said quietly. "The Sterling legacy isn't inside those walls. It’s right here."

She pointed to her own chest, then to his.

"Helena tried to destroy us because she thought wealth was something you could steal with a signature and a fire," Evelyn continued, her voice echoing over the misty water. "She didn't realize that the strength of this family was never in the fortune. It was in our ability to survive."

Arthur looked at the silver ring in his hand, then at his sister's scar-marked arm. A deep, cleansing tear finally rolled down his cheek, washing away ten years of grief, guilt, and deception.

"What do we do now?" Arthur asked softly.

May you like

Evelyn turned around, looking down the river toward the bright skyline of the city in the distance.

"Now," Evelyn declared, her eyes burning with an invincible light, "we rebuild. And we hunt down every man who helped her."
