Chapter 3 - Blood and Whisper

The command center of Cross Manor hummed with high-tech monitors and military-grade encryption systems. Outside, thirty heavily armed soldiers patrolling the perimeter were doubled to sixty. The entire estate had transformed into an impenetrable iron fortress.
Holden stood over the main tactical table, watching satellite feeds of the eastern docks.
"Dimitri Volkov," Marcus said, pulling up a dossier of a scarred, ruthless Russian warlord who controlled the city’s illegal weapons trade. "If Volkov has had Mara all these years, he kept her off the grid. No ransom demands, no taunts. He kept her hidden in a black-site facility."
"He didn't just keep her hidden," Holden snarled, slamming his hands onto the digital map. "He used her as collateral to keep his own lieutenants in line. And now, somehow, her child escaped."
"How did a seven-year-old child escape a Volkov safehouse and navigate five miles of icy city streets directly to your eastern gate?" Marcus asked reasonably.
"She didn't do it alone," Holden said. "Someone on the inside gave their life to get her out. That’s whose blood is on her coat."
Before Marcus could reply, the door to the command room creaked open.
Dr. Vale stood in the threshold, looking unnerved. "Holden... she’s awake. And she’s refusing to eat or speak to anyone. But Phantom won't leave her side, and she’s asking for 'the man with the cold eyes.'"
Holden didn't hesitate. He pushed past Marcus and walked down the long, carpeted corridor to the private suite.
When he opened the door, the scene inside was almost surreal. The tiny girl was sitting buried under a mountain of heavy goose-down blankets. Phantom was lying completely flat across the bed beside her, his massive head resting directly on her lap. The terrifying killer beast was letting her small, bruised fingers gently trace the scar over his left eye.
As Holden walked in, the girl flinched, shrinking back into the pillows, her dark green eyes—the exact same shade as Holden’s—filled with instinctual terror.
"It's okay," Holden said, stopping ten feet away. He unbuckled his shoulder holster, removed his tactical knife, and placed them on a distant side table. "Nobody in this house will ever hurt you again."
She watched him cautiously, her tiny chest heaving. "Are you... Uncle Holden?"
The word hit Holden like a bullet to the chest. The ruthless mafia Don, feared across three continents, felt his throat tighten.
"Yes," he said softly, stepping closer and kneeling beside the bed so he was at eye level with her. "I'm Holden."
Tears filled her eyes, spilling down her pale, hollow cheeks. "Mommy told me about you. She said... she said if I ever ran away, I had to find the house with the iron raven gate and look for the giant black dog."
"Your mother gave you Phantom’s secret name," Holden murmured, reaching out hand-over-hand until his palm rested gently on her shoulder. "Mara trained Phantom when he was just a pup, before she was taken."
"Mommy said Phantom would remember her," the girl sobbed, burying her face into Phantom’s dark fur. Phantom let out a low, comforting hum, nudging her face with his wet nose. "She said you were the strongest man in the world... and that you’d come save her."

Holden felt a cold, lethal stillness wash over his soul. "Where is she, sweetheart? What is your name?"
"I'm Chloe," she whispered. "And Mommy is in the dark place under the water. The bad man with the iron teeth is going to hurt her because I ran away."
