Chapter 8 - The Crown of Ashes

The morning sun broke through the heavy storm clouds over Cross Manor, painting the snow-covered courtyard in brilliant shades of gold and pink.

The entire estate was silent. The tire marks and spent casings from the night before had been cleared away. Standing at the edge of the grand stone driveway was Chloe, wrapped in a warm ivory coat, holding Dr. Vale’s hand. Beside her, Phantom stood tall, his ears perked up, his eyes fixed on the long winding driveway.

A convoy of three black armored SUVs glided through the iron raven gates.

The lead vehicle came to a smooth stop in front of the fountain. The rear door opened, and Holden stepped out. He looked tired, his armor gone, dressed in his usual dark suit, but his posture was that of a king who had secured his realm.

He turned and held out his hand to the passenger seat.

A woman stepped out. She was wrapped in a soft cashmere coat, her long dark hair brushed, her face pale but glowing in the morning light.

Chloe froze. Her small breath hitched in her throat.

"Mommy...?" she whispered.

Mara dropped to her knees right there on the cold stone driveway, tears streaming freely down her face, her arms thrown wide open. "Chloe! Baby!"

Chloe broke away from Dr. Vale, her small boots sliding over the light dusting of snow as she ran with all her strength. She slammed into her mother's arms, weeping hysterically as Mara pulled her tight against her chest, kissing her face, her hair, her eyes over and over again.

"I’m here, baby... I’m here... we're safe," Mara sobbed, holding her daughter like she would never let go again.

Phantom trotted over slowly, letting out a low, happy bark before resting his massive head across both of their shoulders, wrapping his big body around them like a dark shield.

Holden walked over, standing above his reunited family. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the silver raven pendant, gently draping it back around his sister’s neck.

Mara looked up at her brother, her eyes filled with an overwhelming, silent gratitude. She reached up and placed her hand over his hand. "Thank you, Holden. You brought us home."

Holden looked down at his sister, at his niece, and at the beast that had brought them all together. The cold, ruthless underworld Don who ruled through fear felt something warm settle deep inside his chest—a feeling he thought had died eight years ago.

"This is your home now," Holden said, his voice firm, powerful, and unwavering. "And as long as I draw breath, no shadow in this world will ever touch either of you again."

Around them, the guards stood at attention, bowing their heads in deep respect. The war was over. The blood had been settled. And the Cross family reigned supreme—unbroken, protected, and finally whole.
