Chapter 3 - The Race Against Death

The rain fell in violent, torrential sheets as four black armored Escalades tore through the narrow, dark streets of Boston's south side.
Inside the lead vehicle, Emma sat strapped into the leather seat beside me, clutching a warm cup of cocoa provided by my driver. She stared out the tinted glass with wide, innocent eyes, completely unaware that the six heavily armed men around her were preparing for war.
"Target location approaching," my tactical leader, Vance, reported from the front seat, checking his weapon. "Run-down apartment complex on 4th Street. Boss, if Raymond poisoned her last night, the window for survival is closing fast."
"She’s still alive," I said through gritted teeth. "She had enough strength to write that note and send her daughter to me. She's fighting."
We pulled up to the dilapidated brick building. Before the tires even stopped rolling, six guards vaulted out, forming a tight perimeter around my door. Vance carried Emma wrapped safely inside a bulletproof vest, while I drew my weapon and marched up the decaying stairs.
The door to apartment 3B was kicked off its hinges in a fraction of a second.
The apartment was tiny, smelling of damp air and cheap medicine. And there, on a small mattress on the floor, lay Elena Carter.
Her skin was pale as marble. Her lips were blue, and her chest moved with shallow, agonizing hitches.
"Mommy!" Emma screamed, pushing past Vance and hurling her small body onto the mattress. "Mommy, I brought the boss! I brought help!"
Elena’s eyelids fluttered weakly. With immense effort, her pale hand lifted an inch, her fingers grazing Emma’s cheek.
"E... Emma..." she rasped, her voice barely a breath. "You... you made it..."
"Doctor! Get in here now!" I shouted.
Dr. Mercer rushed into the room with two paramedics, carrying portable life-support gear. He quickly pressed a scanner against Elena’s neck and checked her pupils.
"Organophosphate neurotoxin," Mercer declared grimly. "Slow-acting military poison. She has less than twenty minutes before complete respiratory failure. We need to intubate and administer the antidote at the estate hospital right now!"
"Do it!" I commanded.
As the paramedics lifted Elena onto a stretcher, Vance leaned toward me and whispered, "Boss, Raymond just checked in on the encrypted comms. He's asking why the private security unit left the estate. He knows something is happening."

A deadly smile spread across my face.
"Let him wonder," I whispered softly. "Tell him I discovered a lead on the car bomb. Tell him to meet me in the grand study alone."
