Chapter 6 - The King's Oath

Three days later, the rain had finally stopped over Boston. Sunlight broke through the heavy grey clouds, illuminating the manicured gardens of Blackwood Estate.
The Valenti Syndicate was no more. In seventy-two hours, my forces had dismantled their entire network, securing total, absolute control over the city’s underground empire. There were no more traitors. There were no more threats.
In the master guest suite of the estate, Elena Carter sat in an armchair by the sunlit window, wearing a comfortable silk robe. Her face was full of color again, though her eyes were still wide with disbelief as she looked around the luxurious room.
Emma was sitting on a plush rug in the center of the room, playing happily with a massive set of new toys my staff had purchased for her.
A knock sounded at the door, and I stepped inside, dressed in a tailored three-piece suit.
"Mr. Blackwood," Elena said quickly, attempting to stand up. "Please... I don't even know how to begin thanking you. You saved my life. You cared for my baby girl..."
"Sit down, Elena," I said gently, waving my hand. "You don't owe me any thanks. In fact, it is I who owe you everything."
I walked over and placed a sleek black leather folder onto the table beside her.
"What is this?" Elena asked, opening the folder.
Inside were legal documents—title deeds to a beautiful beachfront house in Rhode Island, full ownership of a private security firm, and a trust fund established under Emma Carter's name containing tens of millions of dollars.
"This is your official employment contract," I said with a faint smile. "You said you came here for the cleaning job. Well, consider yourself retired."
Elena’s eyes flooded with tears. "Mr. Blackwood... this is too much. We're just simple people. We can't accept this..."
"Elena, your daughter walked through a storm, faced down my armed guards, and handed me the key to saving my own life and uncovering a traitor," I said, my voice echoing with solemn gravity. "She showed more courage than any grown man I have ever met."
I dropped to one knee beside little Emma, who looked up from her toys with bright, sparkling eyes.
"Emma," I said softly.
"Yes, Mister Julian?"
I pulled out a delicate gold necklace with a tiny diamond-encrusted raven pendant and carefully fastened it around her neck.
"This pendant means you are under my personal protection," I told her. "No matter where you go in this world, no matter how old you get... if you ever need help, if you are ever scared, you show this to anyone, and my entire family will come to your side."
Emma touched the shiny gold raven with her small thumb, her face lighting up with pure joy.
"Does this mean mommy never has to cry about rent again?" she asked innocently.
"Never again," I promised, looking up at Elena. "You and your mother are family now. And in the Blackwood family, we take care of our own."
Emma threw her arms around my neck, giving the most feared mob boss in Boston a tight, warm hug.

"Thank you, Uncle Julian!"
I held the little girl close, a genuine smile breaking across my face for the first time in ten years. The dark world I built would always be full of shadows, but from that day forward, little Emma Carter was the light that kept the monsters at bay.
