Chapter 3 - The Billionaire's Interrogation

The air in the master suite seemed to drop ten degrees—not from the freezer's lingering chill, but from the sheer, suffocating stillness that came over Grant Whitmore.
He didn't blink. His dark eyes locked onto Maya’s face, searching every micro-expression for hesitation, deceit, or panic. Finding none, his posture shifted, settling into the terrifying focus that had ruined dozens of corporate rivals.
"Ascension Ventures," Grant repeated quietly, the name tasting like ash on his tongue.
"Yes, sir," Maya said, her voice growing stronger as her strength returned. "I didn't mean to pry. A document fell out of an unsealed folder on the top shelf. When I looked at the numbers, I realized the transfer date matched the exact day the hospital reported a shortfall in their new chemotherapy unit funding."
"And you confronted Vanessa?"
"I asked her about it," Maya admitted, looking down at her lap with a mix of shame and regret. "I thought... I foolishly thought it was a administrative mistake. I thought she would explain it. But she smiled at me, Mr. Whitmore. A smile that made my blood run cold. She told me it was a 'confidential investment.'"
Grant leaned back in his chair, his hands clasped beneath his chin. "And after that?"
"After that, she started watching me. She asked about Lily’s school. She asked about my lease. She subtly reminded me how easy it is for an unmarried mother with no savings to lose custody if she loses her job. And then this morning..." Maya swallowed hard, tears rising in her eyes as she looked at her sleeping daughter. "She asked me to go into the freezer. When I stepped inside, I heard the lock turn."
Grant stood up slowly, walking toward a small antique mahogany desk in the corner of the suite. He unlocked a hidden drawer, pulled out a encrypted satellite phone, and dialed a number.
"Marcus," Grant spoke into the receiver, his voice flat and deadly. "Initiate a full forensic audit of the Children’s Hospital foundation account immediately. Focus on all outbound transfers over the last twenty-four months. Look for an offshore entity named Ascension Ventures."
A pause on the line as his chief financial investigator responded.
"I don't care if it's a Saturday," Grant cut in coldly. "I want the complete banking trail on my desk in two hours. And Marcus... send a private forensic team to sweep the estate's kitchen security servers. Someone may attempt to wipe the footage from eight o'clock this morning."
He ended the call and walked back to the fireplace, staring into the flames.
"My brother, Richard, died four years ago," Grant said softly, speaking of Vanessa’s late husband. "He was a good man, but he was blind to Vanessa’s greed. When he passed, I gave her a generous allowance, a seat on the charity board, and residence at this estate out of respect for his memory. I suspected she was vain and wasteful. I never imagined she was a thief. And I certainly never imagined she was a monster capable of murder."
Maya looked up at him, startled by the word. "Murder?"
"If Lily hadn't found me in the West Wing hallway, you would have been in that freezer for hours," Grant said, turning to look at her with raw, unfiltered emotion. "At negative four degrees, hypothermia induces fatal cardiac arrest in less than forty-five minutes. She didn't just lock you away to scare you, Maya. She intended to let you die, claim it was a tragic workplace accident, and clean up the mess before the benefit gala tonight."
A violent shudder ran through Maya’s body. She had known it was bad, but hearing the truth spoken so bluntly by a man like Grant made the horror of her near-death experience fully real.
Grant walked over, kneeling beside the sofa so he was eye-level with her. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently taking hers. The contrast between his heat and her lingering chill was overwhelming, sending a sudden, intense jolt through her core.
"Listen to me, Maya," Grant said, his dark eyes burning into hers. "You saved that hospital. You protected those children at the risk of your own life. You and Lily will never be unsafe under my roof again. From this moment on, you are not a employee in this house. You are under my personal protection."
"Mr. Whitmore, I... I don't know what to say," Maya stammered, breathless.
"Call me Grant," he replied softly.
Before Maya could respond, a soft knock sounded at the door. Grant’s head of security, Thomas, stepped inside, looking grim.
"Boss," Thomas said quietly. "Mrs. Vanessa is downstairs in the grand foyer. She’s demanding to speak with you. She claims Maya stole a valuable diamond necklace from her suite before her 'accident' in the kitchen and is threatening to call the city police."

Grant’s lips curved into a cold, lethal smile. "She wants the police involved? Excellent. Tell her I will be down shortly to discuss her allegations."
He stood up, looking back at Maya. "Stay here with Lily. Rest. The tide is about to turn."
