Chapter 4 - The Web of Deceit

Down in the grand foyer, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Crystal chandeliers cast brilliant light over marble floors, but the air was poisoned by Vanessa Whitmore’s frantic venom.

She paced back and forth across the checkered floor, her high heels clicking loudly like gunshots. She had changed into a shimmering navy-blue evening gown for the upcoming benefit gala, but her face was flushed, her makeup slightly smeared around her eyes.

When Grant descended the mahogany staircase, his posture was impossibly composed, his hands tucked casually into his pockets.

"Grant!" Vanessa declared loudly, gesturing dramatically toward the stairs. "Thank goodness! You have to listen to me! That woman—that common maid you took into your personal suite—is a thief! I searched my vault twenty minutes ago and discovered my three-carat Harry Winston diamond necklace is missing!"

Grant reached the bottom step, stopping five feet from her. "Is that so?"

"Yes!" Vanessa cried, taking a step closer. "She’s been scheming for weeks! I caught her snooping around my personal documents, and when I confronted her, she tried to hide in the kitchen walk-in freezer to avoid me! She must have accidentally locked herself in while trying to stash the stolen goods!"

Grant stared at her for three long, terrifying seconds. The silence in the foyer was so absolute that the ticking of the grandfather clock sounded like thunder.

"Vanessa," Grant said softly. "You have always been an inadequate liar, but this performance is embarrassing even for you."

Vanessa gasped, clutching her pearls. "How dare you! I am your brother’s widow—"

"You are a parasite," Grant interrupted, his tone dropping into a lethal, quiet register. "My security team has already recovered the raw, unedited footage from the kitchen corridor's hidden backup server—the server you didn't know existed."

Vanessa froze. The color drained from her face, leaving her skin looking sickly grey beneath her foundation.

"The footage clearly shows you luring Maya into the freezer," Grant continued smoothly, taking a slow step toward her. "It shows you shutting the door. It shows you turning the key in the deadlock. And it shows you walking away while a five-year-old child screamed for her mother."

Vanessa’s lips trembled. "Grant... I... it was a joke! A lesson! She was being disrespectful—"

"And then there is the matter of Ascension Ventures," Grant added, cutting her off like a scythe through dry grass.

At the mention of the offshore shell company, Vanessa stumbled backward, her heel catching on the edge of a Persian rug. She barely caught her balance against a marble pillar.

"My forensic auditors have been working for the past hour," Grant said, pulling a slip of paper from his inner pocket. "It turns out the four hundred and eighty thousand dollars Maya discovered was only the latest transaction. Over the past three years, you have systematically siphoned over three point two million dollars out of the Whitmore Children's Hospital pediatric fund."

"That’s... that’s a lie!" Vanessa shrieked, panic finally breaking through her sophisticated facade. "You can't prove that!"

"I don't need to prove it," Grant said coldly. "The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the State Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Division will prove it. I sent them the preliminary audit thirty minutes ago."

Vanessa looked around the foyer like a trapped animal. The security guards standing at the doors offered no sympathy; their faces were stone.

"You can't do this to me," Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking. "The benefit gala starts in two hours! Two hundred of the city’s most influential donors, politicians, and reporters are coming to this house! If I am arrested now, the Whitmore name will be ruined! The charity will collapse!"

Grant looked down at her with pure, unadulterated disdain. "The Whitmore name will survive because I will personally guarantee every dollar you stole is reimbursed out of my private estate. As for you, Vanessa... you will play your part tonight."

May you like

"What?" she stammered, confused.

"You will stay in your suite under guard," Grant instructed coldly. "You will get ready for the gala. And when the time is right, you will stand on that stage in front of every person you attempted to deceive... and you will answer for what you did to Maya Cole."
