Chapter 3 - The Frozen Empire

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the storm had passed, leaving the glass skyscrapers of the financial district gleaming in the pale sunlight. But inside the mahogany-lined boardroom of Vale International, a different kind of tempest was raging.

Eleanor Vale stood at the head of the sixty-foot conference table, wearing a crisp suit of tailor-made black wool and pearl earrings. Her eyes were shadowed, but her posture remained imposing as she stared down seven senior board members.

“This is an outrage!” Eleanor slammed her palm onto the table. “My son is suffering from a severe psychotic break! He has locked himself in a hotel suite with an unidentified woman and is attempting to hijack the company’s operating capital! You must vote to strip his remaining trust shares immediately!”

The board members exchanged uneasy glances. At the far end of the room, the double doors swung open with a resounding bang.

I walked into the room.

I didn't wear the slouching shoulders of the grieving widower they had seen for twenty-four months. I wore a tailored charcoal suit, my posture straight, flanked by Detective Ortiz in full dress uniform and Arthur Vance carrying a thick leather briefcase.

Beside me walked Claire. She was dressed in an elegant ivory dress, her hair pulled back neatly, her head held high despite the pallor of her skin. In her arms, little Maya wore a clean pink sweater, staring at the bright room with wide, curious dark eyes.

Eleanor’s breath hitched. Her hand flew to her collarbone, her face draining of color until she looked like a marble statue in a graveyard.

“Good morning, Mother,” I said, my voice carrying to every corner of the silent room.

“Security!” Eleanor shrieked, backing away toward the window. “Get this woman out of here! She’s an impostor! A fraud trying to extort this family!”

“The only fraud in this room is sitting in your chair, Eleanor,” Arthur Vance declared, opening his briefcase and dropping four thick stacks of documents onto the conference table. “These are certified genetic match records processed four hours ago by the State Forensic Laboratory. Maya Vale is Daniel Vale’s biological daughter. And this woman is Claire Vale—living, breathing, and very much legally alive.”

A collective gasp rippled through the board members. Several of them stood up to look at the paperwork.

Detective Ortiz stepped forward, unbuttoning the leather strap on her holster. “Eleanor Vale, I have a warrant for your arrest issued by the Superior Court on charges of aggravated kidnapping, conspiracy to commit murder, filing fraudulent legal documents, and corporate embezzlement.”

“This is absurd!” Eleanor screamed, her polished composure disintegrating into wild, feral panic. “You have no proof! You can’t touch me! I built this company!”

“You built it on a lie,” Claire spoke up, her voice trembling slightly at first, then steadying into pure iron. “You drugged me in your own teahouse. You paid Marcus Vance two hundred thousand dollars to hold me in a cabin in Blackwood County. You told me my husband was dead.”

Claire took a step closer to the woman who had tried to erase her existence.

“Look at my daughter, Eleanor,” Claire whispered, holding Maya forward. “Look at the girl you tried to starve in the dark.”

Eleanor didn't look. She scrambled toward the private executive exit behind her chair, but the heavy brass door clicked open before she could reach it. Two uniformed state troopers stepped inside, handcuffs already unclasped.
