Chapter 5 - Blood and Collusion

The scandal erupted across national news networks like a wildfire fed by high winds.

“THE VALE HEIRESS RISES FROM THE DEAD.” “PATRIARCH’S MOTHER CHARGED WITH BIZARRE KIDNAPPING PLOT.”

While the press staked out the gates of the Vale estate, Eleanor’s legal team launched a desperate counteroffensive. Led by Harrison Vance—a ruthless corporate attorney known for destroying witnesses—they filed a motion to throw out Claire’s testimony, alleging she was an unstable former employee suffering from severe psychological delusion.

On Thursday afternoon, a preliminary bail hearing was called at the county courthouse.

Eleanor was escorted into the courtroom in a orange jumpsuit, her hands cuffed to her waist. Yet despite her chains, she held her head high, casting contemptuous glances toward the gallery where Claire, Maya, and I sat.

“Your Honor,” Harrison Vance argued before the judge, waving a stack of medical papers. “My client is a pillar of this community, an eighty-year-old philanthropist who is being subjected to a coordinated smear campaign by her financially desperate son and a woman whose identity remains legally disputed!”

The judge raised an eyebrow. “Disputed, Mr. Vance? The prosecution has submitted three separate DNA matches from state-accredited laboratories.”

“DNA can be manipulated, Your Honor!” Vance pressed on loudly. “We demand a complete dismissal of the kidnapping charges based on lack of physical evidence connecting Mrs. Eleanor Vale directly to the Blackwood property!”

At the prosecution table, Detective Ortiz stood up, holding a yellow manila folder.

“If it pleases the court,” Ortiz said calmly, “we would like to enter new evidence recovered two hours ago from the home server of Dr. Julian Mercer—the physician who signed Claire Vale’s death certificate two years ago.”

Eleanor’s lawyer stiffened.

Ortiz opened the folder and read aloud. “We have recovered an encrypted audio recording of a phone call made fourteen months ago between Dr. Mercer and Eleanor Vale. I will play the transcript excerpt for the record.”

Ortiz pressed play on her recorder. My mother’s unmistakable, sharp voice echoed across the courtroom:

“If the child dies in that cabin, Julian, bury it on the north ridge. Daniel can never know she was pregnant. If he finds out he has an heir, I lose the voting proxy forever.”

The courtroom erupted into total chaos. Reporters scrambled for the exit doors, bailiffs shouted for order, and Harrison Vance sat down slowly, pulling his hands away from his client as if she were made of radioactive waste.

Eleanor turned her head toward us. For the first time, her icy facade cracked open, revealing a terrifying, bottomless malice.

“You ruined this family, Claire!” Eleanor shrieked over the judge’s banging gavel. “You were a nobody! A low-class girl who seduced my son! You didn't deserve the Vale name!”

Claire didn't flinch. She sat beside me, gently covering Maya’s ears so our daughter wouldn't hear the hatred coming from her grandmother's mouth.

“I didn't take your family, Eleanor,” Claire said softly, her voice carrying through a lull in the noise. “You threw it away.”
