Chapter 6 - The Thread Unspools

By Sunday afternoon, the penthouse had settled into a semblance of domestic normalcy that felt both fragile and miraculous.
Miles was sitting at the massive marble kitchen island, happily devouring a stack of chocolate chip pancakes prepared by Julian’s private chef, who had braved the plowed streets to arrive early. Baby Sarah was sleeping soundly in her proper bassinet, her color fully restored, her vitals completely normal according to Dr. Bennett's morning checkup.
Julian sat across from Miles, reviewing encrypted security intelligence reports on his tablet, when the private elevator chimed.
Detective Marcus Miller stepped into the penthouse, stamping the melting snow off his heavy boots. But unlike his previous visit, Miller’s face was dark, tense, and carrying the unmistakable weight of a grim discovery.
Julian stood up immediately, gesturing for Miller to follow him into the private study away from the kitchen.
"What did you find?" Julian asked, closing the heavy oak pocket doors behind them.
Miller dropped a clear evidence bag onto the mahogany desk. Inside was a damp, waterlogged women’s leather wallet, its edges frosted with ice crystals.
"Our dive team recovered this two hours ago from a frozen storm drain fifty yards from the park bench where you found the kids," Miller said, pulling out a small notebook. "Inside was a state ID, a debit card, and a crumpled handwritten grocery list."
Julian leaned over the desk, reading the name printed on the weathered driver's license: Elena Vance. Age: 31.
"Elena Vance," Julian repeated, frowning. "Any relation to that CWA caseworker who tried to snatch the kids yesterday?"
"Distant cousin, according to initial records, but they haven't spoken in years," Miller replied grimly. "That’s not the interesting part, Julian. Look at the back of the ID."
Julian picked up the evidence bag, turning the license over. Stuck to the back with clear tape was a small business card bearing a golden corporate logo that made Julian’s blood instantly turn to ice water.
Sterling Global Enterprises.
Julian stared at the card. Richard Sterling. The executive vice president of Sterling Global—Ashworth Technologies’ fiercest corporate rival, a ruthless conglomerate that had spent the last six months attempting a hostile corporate raid on Julian’s firm, stealing patents, poaching engineers, and engaging in corporate espionage.
"What is Sterling's connection to a desperate mother abandoned in a park?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper.
"We ran Elena Vance’s financial records this morning," Miller said, his eyes locking onto Julian’s. "Three days ago, a wire transfer of fifty thousand dollars was deposited into her personal checking account from an offshore shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands. The ultimate parent company of that shell corp? A subsidiary wholly owned by Sterling Global."
The puzzle pieces clicked into place with terrifying clarity.
It wasn't a random act of cruelty. It wasn't a mother simply walking away because she was poor. It was a targeted, calculated corporate hit. Sterling knew how vulnerable Julian was regarding his past divorce and his longing for family. They had weaponized a desperate woman, paid her off to abandon her children on Julian’s exact walking route through Henderson Park, intending to trigger a public scandal, tie Julian up in endless child welfare litigation, and fracture his focus while Sterling launched their final hostile takeover vote at Tuesday's board meeting.
"They used children," Julian whispered, the sheer, unadulterated rage building inside him feeling like a ticking bomb. "They used a mother's desperation and two innocent kids as pawns in a corporate stock war."
"We have the bank transfer records, but Elena Vance herself is currently missing," Miller warned. "Our search warrants indicate she checked out of her Brooklyn motel yesterday morning under an alias. If Sterling’s people paid her off, they probably also made sure she couldn't talk."

Julian stood straight up, his expression hardening into absolute, lethal steel.
"Find Elena Vance," Julian ordered, his voice echoing in the study. "Spare no expense. Put every private investigator on my payroll onto the streets. Because on Tuesday morning, I’m walking into the Sterling Global boardroom—and I’m going to burn their entire empire to the ground."
