Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Reckoning

Tuesday morning, 8:55 AM.
The glass-and-steel monolith of Sterling Global Enterprises in midtown Manhattan stood gleaming in the winter sunlight. On the forty-fifth floor, inside the ultra-modern executive boardroom, twelve board members sat around a massive black granite table murmuring in hushed tones.
At the head of the table sat Richard Sterling—a silver-haired, impeccably tailored corporate predator with a shark-like smile. Beside him sat corporate counsel and two public relations specialists. Today was the day of the final emergency shareholder vote to force a hostile merger of Ashworth Technologies under Sterling Global's umbrella. Rumors of Julian Ashworth being bogged down in emergency child welfare scandals had already leaked to the financial press; the stock was primed to plummet, and Sterling was ready to deliver the final blow.
"Gentlemen, it appears Mr. Ashworth is running late," Richard Sterling smirked, checking his gold Patek Philippe watch. "Perhaps the local foster care bureaucracy is proving more difficult to manage than he anticipated."
Clack. Clack. Clack.
Heavy, measured footsteps echoed down the polished marble hallway outside the boardroom doors.
The double oak-and-steel doors did not open politely. They swung inward with a deafening crash that rattled the crystal water pitchers on the table.
Julian Ashworth walked into the room.
He wore a bespoke charcoal-gray suit, a crisp white shirt, and a deep crimson tie. But it wasn't his attire that made every executive in the room instantly freeze; it was the terrifying, predator-like aura radiating from him. He looked like a man who had stared into hell, defeated its demons, and come back specifically to collect a debt.
"Julian," Richard Sterling said, forcing a smooth, practiced smile as he stood up. "I trust your weekend was... eventful. We were just discussing your absence from the pre-merger—"
"Save your breath, Richard," Julian interrupted, his voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. He didn't take a seat. He walked straight to the head of the table, pulling a heavy manila folder from his briefcase and slamming it down onto the granite surface directly in front of Sterling. 🧁
Sterling’s smile faltered slightly. "What is this?"
"That is a certified forensic audit of the fifty-thousand-dollar wire transfer routed through a Cayman Island shell corporation to a woman named Elena Vance," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Followed by cell phone tower ping logs showing direct communication between your corporate security detail and the burner phone used to coordinate the abandonment of two starving children in Henderson Park last Friday night."
The color drained entirely from Richard Sterling’s face. The PR specialists behind him stiffened, their clipboards trembling in their hands.
"That... that is absurd. Total fabrication—" Sterling stammered, his aristocratic composure cracking in real-time.
"Is it?" Julian asked smoothly. He pressed a button on his encrypted tablet.
The boardroom’s massive state-of-the-art wall-mounted multimedia screen flickered to life. Instead of quarterly revenue charts, the display showed a live video feed from a secure medical recovery suite upstate.
On the screen sat Elena Vance, bruised and shaken, but flanked by two of Detective Miller’s senior homicide detectives and a court-appointed federal prosecutor.
“My name is Elena Vance,” the woman on the screen spoke clearly into the recording rig. “I was paid fifty thousand dollars by Mr. Sterling’s private fixer, Arthur Pendelton, to leave my children on that specific park bench where Mr. Ashworth took his shortcut. They told me Julian Ashworth would be ruined by the scandal, and that my kids would be quietly placed in a secure private trust afterward. But they lied. They threatened to kill me if I came back for them.”
The silence in the executive boardroom became absolute, heavy, and suffocating. Several board members slowly turned their heads to stare at Sterling in abject horror.
Julian leaned over the granite table, planting both hands flat, his gray eyes locking onto Sterling’s panicked gaze.
"You didn't just engage in corporate espionage, Richard. You committed human trafficking, child endangerment, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping," Julian said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper that every person in the room could hear. "Federal marshals are currently freezing all of Sterling Global's corporate assets. Warrants are signed. Your bail hearing isn't happening, because you aren't getting bail."
Sterling lunged for the door, panic finally breaking his veneer entirely. "Guard! Security—"
Before Sterling could take two steps, the boardroom doors swung open again. Detective Marcus Miller and two federal marshals stepped inside, handcuffs gleaming in the fluorescent lights.
"Richard Sterling, you have the right to remain silent," Miller announced crisply, the steel cuffs clicking into place around the corporate titan's wrists.

As Sterling was dragged out of the room, weeping and screaming curses, Julian stood tall, straightening his tie. He looked around the table at the trembling board members.
"The merger is canceled," Julian announced coldly. "Meeting adjourned."
