Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Blood

The private medical suite on the third floor of Rinaldi Tower was normally reserved for visiting dignitaries, high-ranking syndicate associates, or Dante himself when emergency meetings ran twenty hours straight.

Tonight, it smelled of antiseptic, warm saline, and sterile sheets.

Khloe stirred slowly against the plush pillows of the medical cot. Her eyelids fluttered open, heavy and dry, as the glaring white lights above her slowly focused into a steady ceiling.

An IV line was taped securely to the back of her right hand, pumping a clear fluid mixed with dextrose directly into her veins. The fuzzy static in her head had receded, replaced by a dull, throbbing headache behind her eyes.

“Easy. Don't try to sit up too fast.”

The deep, resonant voice came from the shadows near the corner of the room.

Khloe turned her head weakly.

Seated in a high-backed leather chair, watching her with intense, unblinking grey-blue eyes, was Dante Rinaldi. He had removed his suit jacket; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and his sleeves were rolled up to his forearms. He looked less like a corporate titan and more like a predator resting patiently in his den.

Khloe’s breath caught in her throat. Fear, cold and sharp, flooded her system.

Rinaldi.

Everyone in the city knew who he was—even the cleaning staff who whispered in the breakrooms. He owned the building. He owned the security teams. He owned half the contracts in Manhattan.

“Mr... Mr. Rinaldi,” Khloe stammered, her voice raspy and dry. She tried to pull herself upright, clutching the thin hospital blanket to her chest. “I’m... I’m so sorry. I didn't mean to cause a disturbance in the lobby. I’ll clean up the buffer, I’ll pay for any scuffs on the marble, just... please don't fire me. Please don't blackball me from Meridian. I need this job.”

Dante stood up from the chair. He walked slowly toward the cot, his movements graceful and completely silent.

“You passed out from severe hypoglycemia, Ms. Evans,” Dante said, his voice calm, measured, and devoid of the corporate warmth she had expected. “According to our house physician, your blood glucose dropped to a level that could have easily induced a fatal coma. Your continuous monitor failed three days ago, and your meter was empty.”

Khloe shrank back against the pillows, her cheeks burning with humiliation. “How... how do you know about my monitor?”

“Because I had my medical team pull your diagnostic history the moment we brought you up here,” Dante replied, stopping right beside the bed. He looked down at her with an expression that was impossible to read. “And because I make it my business to know everything that happens inside this building. Including the fact that one of my night custodians was starving herself to feed her child.”

Before Khloe could formulate a reply, the door to the medical suite clicked open.

Lily trotted into the room, holding a paper cup of warm apple juice in one hand and a plate of crackers in the other, escorted by a smiling female nurse. The little girl’s eyes lit up when she saw her mother awake.

“Mama!” Lily cried, dropping the crackers on a side table and scrambling up onto the edge of the cot, throwing her arms around Khloe’s neck. “You woke up! The nice man gave me juice!”

Khloe wrapped her arms around her daughter, burying her face in Lily’s curls, tears prickling at the corners of her eyes. “I’m awake, baby. Mama’s right here. I’m okay.”

Dante watched the embrace, a muscle ticking sharply in his jaw. The grey-blue depths of his eyes softened imperceptibly, mirroring an emotion he usually kept locked away behind impenetrable iron walls.

He turned his gaze away, walking toward the large observation window that looked out over the rain-slicked streets of New York.

“Where is the father?” Dante asked quietly, not turning around.

Khloe stiffened. The warmth in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

“He... he’s not in the picture, Mr. Rinaldi,” Khloe whispered, holding Lily a little tighter. “He left before she was born.”

“And your family?” Dante pressed, his tone clinical, probing. “You have no support network in the city? No safety net?”

“My brother Brandon left six months ago,” Khloe said, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed exhaustion and pride. “I handle things on my own. I don't need charity. I just need my job.”

Dante turned back to face her. He walked slowly back to the side of the bed, reaching into his trouser pocket. He pulled out a sleek, black titanium business card and placed it gently on the metal tray beside the medical supplies.

“Charity is for people who ask for handouts, Ms. Evans,” Dante said, his voice dropping into a register that brook no argument. “What I am offering is an adjustment of operational parameters.”

Khloe stared at the card. Embossed in silver lettering was a direct, private number—not the corporate switchboard, but a direct line to Dante Rinaldi’s personal office.

“I don't understand,” Khloe whispered.

“Walter Henderson has been terminated,” Dante stated simply. “Effective five minutes ago. His contract was cancelled due to gross misconduct and hostile workplace violations.”

Khloe’s jaw dropped. “Fired? But... Mr. Henderson was the supervisor—”

“He was an incompetent tyrant who failed to recognize human dignity under his own roof,” Dante interrupted coldly. He leaned in slightly, his intense eyes locking onto Khloe’s dark, exhausted gaze. “Furthermore, Meridian Facility Services will be replacing your contract with a direct, full-time administrative position within Rinaldi Enterprises. Full medical benefits. Complete coverage for your diabetic supplies. And a private, secure daycare facility on the tenth floor for your daughter during your shifts.”

The room went dead silent.

Khloe stared at the powerful mafia boss as if he had spoken in a foreign language. Her brain struggled to process the sheer, impossible scale of what he was offering. A full-time job? Medical benefits? A daycare in the tower?

“Why?” Khloe breathed, the word slipping past her lips before she could stop it. “Why are you doing this, Mr. Rinaldi? You don’t even know me.”

Dante stared at her for a long, agonizing moment.

May you like

He didn't answer right away. Instead, his gaze shifted from Khloe’s dark eyes down to Lily’s round face, lingering on the distinct, unique shape of the child’s amber-speckled brown eyes—eyes that carried an uncanny, haunting resemblance to a face Dante had not seen in a mirror for over twenty years.

A face belonging to a woman who had vanished from his life a lifetime ago.
