Chapter 6 - Blood on the Harbor

The Boston Seaport Harbor Club was an exclusive, glass-and-steel penthouse structure jutting out over the black waters of the Atlantic.
It was 10:00 p.m.
Inside the grand ballroom, eighty high-ranking figures of New England’s organized crime families gathered around a massive horseshoe-shaped table. Heavy smoke from expensive cigars drifted up toward the high ceilings.
At the head of the room stood Victor Moretti.
He wore a pristine white tuxedo, a glass of thirty-year-old single malt scotch in his hand. His scarred face radiated an arrogant, triumphant glee.
"Gentlemen!" Victor boomed, slamming his hand on the mahogany table to command the room's attention. "We all know why we are here tonight. The era of Dominic Russo is over. The man is hooked up to machines in his estate, breathing his last weak breaths."
A quiet, uneasy murmur rippled through the room. The old-school bosses from South Boston looked at Victor with deep suspicion, but none dared speak up—Victor’s heavily armed mercenaries stood posted at every exit, their submachine guns clearly visible beneath their long coats.
"Dominic was weak!" Victor shouted, his voice rising in dramatic passion. "He wasted our profits on legal shipping lines, on community foundations, on keeping us out of lucrative markets! Under my leadership, the Moretti family will expand our territory from Maine to Rhode Island. I ask for your allegiance tonight!"
"And what if we refuse, Victor?" an elderly boss from the East Boston syndicate asked coldly.
Victor’s smile turned vicious. He reached for his jacket. "Then you will join Dominic in the dark."
Before Victor could draw his weapon, the heavy floor-to-ceiling glass doors leading to the penthouse terrace shattered inward with an explosion of crystal shards.
Flashbang grenades bounced across the polished hardwood floor.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Blinding white light and deafening concussive blasts filled the ballroom. Men screamed, tumbling out of their chairs, covering their eyes as smoke filled the room.
Through the shattered glass terrace doors, illuminated by the flashing red lights of police boats lurking in the harbor below, walked Dominic Russo.
He wore a immaculate midnight-black suit. In his right hand, he held his silver suppressed pistol; behind him swept forty heavily armed Russo enforcers, their assault rifles raised, instantly securing the room.
The smoke cleared slightly.
The entire room stared in absolute, paralyzing horror as Dominic walked casually toward the head table.
"Reports of my death, Victor," Dominic declared, his voice echoing through the ruined ballroom like a thunderbolt, "were greatly exaggerated."
Victor dropped his scotch glass. It shattered on the floor, splashing amber liquid over his expensive shoes. His face turned a sickly, pale green.
"You... you're alive?" Victor stammered, backing away toward his lieutenants. "The poison... the baker..."
"Clara Keough is a woman of honor," Dominic said coldly, stepping up to the horseshoe table. "Something a rat like you could never comprehend. She gave me your poison, Victor. And she told me everything."
Dominic pulled the small glass vial from his pocket and tossed it onto the table in front of the other family bosses.
"Victor Moretti attempted to assassinate me using a civilian baker and a bottle of chemical toxin," Dominic announced to the assembled crime lords. "He violated the sacred code of our city. He brought violence into the homes of innocent people."
The old-school boss from East Boston stood up, his eyes burning with disgust as he looked at Victor. "Poisoning a man’s food? Threatening civilians? You are a dishonorable dog, Victor."
"KILL HIM!" Victor shrieked in absolute panic, drawing his weapon and firing wildly toward Dominic.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Instant, violent chaos erupted in the ballroom.
Dominic ducked behind a heavy marble pillar as bullets chewed through the plaster. His tactical team unleashed a concentrated hail of suppressed gunfire, striking down Victor’s mercenaries where they stood.
Victor didn't stay to fight.
Realizing his coup had completely failed, Victor scrambled through a secret service door behind the bar, followed by his chief lieutenant, a mercenary named Vance.
"DOMINIC!" Matteo roared, firing a burst into an oncoming guard. "HE'S FLEEING TO THE HELIPAD!"
Dominic vaulted over the bar, his eyes locked on the service door. "STAY HERE AND SECURE THE BOSSES! VICTOR IS MINE!"
Dominic sprinted down the service corridor, his leather shoes slamming against the concrete floor. He threw open the heavy steel door leading out onto the roof helipad.
The freezing ocean wind roared across the rooftop, carrying blinding rain. A helicopter’s rotors were already beginning to spin on the pad, chopping the night air with a deafening whir-whir-whir.
Victor was running toward the open cabin of the helicopter.
"MORETTI!" Dominic bellowed over the roar of the engines.
Victor stopped at the edge of the helipad, spinning around, his face wild with animal terror. He raised his pistol and pulled the trigger—CLICK!
Out of ammunition.
Victor cursed, throwing the empty gun into the rain. He pulled a heavy tactical radio from his belt, his eyes blazing with a sick, desperate hatred.
"You think you won, Dominic?!" Victor screamed over the sound of the helicopter blades. "You think you saved her?!"
Dominic slowed his pace, his silver pistol raised, aiming directly at Victor’s chest. "It’s over, Victor. Drop to your knees."
"It's not over!" Victor laughed crazily, pressing the transmitter button on his radio. "Vance isn't with me, Russo! Do you know where Vance is right now?!"
Dominic’s blood instantly ran cold.
"While you were busy setting your little trap here," Victor sneered, his scarred face twisted in a monstrous grin, "I sent Vance and ten of my best shooters to Marblehead! They are breaching your safehouse right now! By the time you kill me, your sweet little baker and her brother will be slaughtered!"
Dominic’s heart stopped.
Without a second thought, Dominic pulled the trigger twice.
THWIP-THWIP!
Two bullets struck Victor Moretti in the center of his chest. The force of the impact lifted the underboss off his feet, sending him tumbling backward off the edge of the helipad, plunging three hundred feet into the dark, freezing waters of Boston Harbor below.
Dominic didn't even watch him fall.

He turned on his heel and sprinted back down the roof stairs, pulling his phone from his pocket, his hand shaking violently.
"MATTEO!" Dominic roared into the phone. "GET THE FLEET TO MARBLEHEAD! NOW!"
